Tackling the hoarding

Apr 30, 2008 02:47PM - 2 comments

Swampy's aunt turns 77 in June, and yesterday Swampy booked plane tickets to go see her.

The governmental authorities have notified Swampy that they intend to investigate his aunt for improper house maintenance, and may legally require her to clean up her house. Swampy is conflicted about the whole thing, but considered his aunt's safety to be more important than the embarrassment of having the fire marshal walk though the house.

Here is a picture of the inside of the house from two years ago, looking from the kitchen out into the living room. The the foreground, you can see the food. In the background, you can see mail, magazines, and many other items.

Oh, Swampy.  I'm sure its horrible to have to go through this.

What does your aunt have to say about the issue?  There was a program a couple of days ago on Dr. Phil (I know, I know) about hoarding.  It was interesting to hear about the things that seemed to have triggered this behavior, which had destroyed her life(the woman who hoarded) along with the lives of her 3 children.

I'm sorry you are having to go through this.  It seems that cleaning out the house will not help, as it will just begin again, but at least it will keep the fire marshall from citing her.

When do you have to go?

Well -- Swampy's aunt simply says that it is her house, her stuff, and her right to live in clutter.

Swampy will leave in a few weeks. He needs to meet with his aunt to go over money and make certain her bills are paid, and the all important property tax people are satisfied. Swampy's aunt has plenty of money and can easily afford all these things.
