On the 3rd September 2007 broke my left patella while up town shopping. Slipped over on wet paving stones and crashed down on my left knee. Op two days later and had patella wired together as was broken in about 6 pieces. Leg put into brace with a 60 degree movement for 6 weeks. In hospital for a week. Had physio after leaving hospital for a few months. On the 4th October 2008 went back into hospital and had the wires removed - in hospital overnight. Two weeks after this op. on the 17th October 2009 broke my L2 vertabrae lifting a heavy box. Was put in a brace which was more for support than anything the surgeon said. Vertabrae collapsed a bit during the next month and then stopped. Healing underway and saw surgeon last in January 2009. Wore the brace for about 3 months, during the day and going out in the car and up town. Also wore the brace on my flight to Brisbane and tripping around Brisbane. Took the brace off when I came home in April. Had another x-ray at the end of May and healing going very well. Was put on the Fosamax Plus drug after the L2 break for osteo. Had hydrotherapy at the hospital for about 6 weeks and am able to bend fairly well but am being very careful about what I lift. Doing exercises at home to strengthen the back and stomach muscles. It has been a long journey but am getting there.

Hi Barbie
Lovely of you to get in touch. What did you break, patella or the vertabrae. Both breaks can be difficult, especially the patella as the knee gets a lot of movement.

Hi signing
I had my cast on for 6 weeks and set at a 80 degree movment. When the cast was taken off I was able to walk on my leg but with crutches assisting me. Have had quite a bit of physio and have done exercises every day for a few months after the break. I went back into hospital at 11 months and had the wires removed so now more exercises.I also was going to the heated pool up town to exercise my knee, found this really helpful. It is now 9 months since the 2nd operation. I have been told it can take up to 2 years for knee to properly heal internally. Have you been to the site called Kneegeeks? This is a really good site for knee problems and I got a lot of info from here. I have a diary on here and my name here is etta1 which will give you some idea what I have been through. I know you will be thinking about bending your knee it might break again as this is what I kept thinking. Keep up with the exercises which is a must. Also I found at the kneegeeks site that sleeping with a pillow between your legs helps to support the knee when it is tender. I still sleep with the pillow there as I find this most comfy. Hope this helps.
Good luck. If you can't find the knee site get back to me and I will find the correct address.
