It's looking like Pouchitis

Jun 17, 2009 10:38AM - 5 comments

The wine I had last night relaxed me enough so that even though I was up 4 times last night I could at least get back to sleep.  The Lupus flare pain is reducing today but the abdominal pain I'd had which was largely masked by the Lupus pain has intensified and having bladder and bowel issues.  Really feel unwell today.  Got into the GP and he feels it is pouchitis.  I don't have a large bowel and they recreated a rectum for me out of my small bowel which they call a pouch.  This lets me go like most other people, just a lot more.  Anyway, he thinks it is infected since my entire abdomen is tender and I'm looking feverish.  I asked him to try doing an ultrasound too as am worried about cysts on the other side but he wants me to do the meds first.  Starting on super powerful cipro and flagyl and thinks I'll see some improvement by Friday if he is right.  Hmmm, seems that the drugs will probably make me sick too so how the heck do you tell?  Sure hope it isn't a bowel obstruction either.  Really tired and sick and hoping I can get some work done today.  So glad I am not on the road this week.  Thanks everyone for your suggestions on yesterday's journal.

I hope you start feeling better.  I know someone who had a similar surgery on her colon as you and she sometimes get pouchitis and I know it's not fun.  And, to have cysts on top of that - OUCH!  I'll say some prayers for you!

Hugs,
Janet

I love Cipro because it works so well. The Flagyl (metronidazole) made me so sick when I diverticulitis this year, I had to stop taking it. The tablet I had was incredibly bitter, couldn't stand to have it in my mouth. I even coated it with a touch of butter just to mask the flavor. Then there was the constant nasty taste in my mouth. I gradually got used to that after a couple days. But my stomach pain and nausea and diarrhea got worse. That's when they changed my meds. We use Flagyl at work on the animals and now I really feel more sympathetic for them. LOL

I hope your inflamed pouch settles down soon. That's got to hurt. Rest up.

hugs, irene

I'm glad you got to a doctor in a timely fashion, that a course of action has commenced, and that you'll know by Friday if you're on the right track.

As a person on extended antibiotic therapy, I take probiotics daily, at leat two hours apart from taking my antibiotics, to help protect my gut.  Perhaps something for you to keep in mind if you're on high doses of poweful forms.

Oh, and were you relaxed last night by wine or whine?  Both can do a body good in moderation!

Take care.

Oh Trudie, you poor thing. I was reading this and thinking, not much fun....Hope the antibiotics work quickly and you start feeling better soon. I can't believe you are working, even from home. You take care of yourself, ok?? Love you, Colleen
