Dr. Rich is an internationally renowned cardiologist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and a member of the Northwestern Memorial Faculty Foundation and the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute in Chicago, IL. He specializes in the care of complex patients including those with advanced heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, LVADs, and those in need of heart transplants. He is also the Medical Director of the Mechanical Circulatory Support Program at Northwestern. He has a robust clinical practice and sees many new patients referred from all over the Chicagoland area as well as those who travel from long distances from around the country. In addition to his medical expertise and high clinical acumen, he is also known for the emphasis he places on the compassionate care of both the patient and the patients' families and the accompanying anxieties that are often present.
Dr. Rich’s education began at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he graduated with University Honors and inscription on the prestigious Bronze Tablet. He attended medical school at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York where he was elected to the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. He then completed his internal medicine residency training at Harvard’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Finally, he completed both his cardiovascular and advanced heart failure/transplant fellowship training at the University of Chicago where he also served as the Chief cardiology fellow.
Dr. Rich has broad research interests within the fields of heart failure, transplant, and mechanical circulatory support and is actively involved in both single- and multi- center clinical trials. Prominent areas of interest of his focus on right ventricular dysfunction from a variety of causes (including pulmonary hypertension and in the LVAD supported patient) as well as improving clinical outcomes in patients with heart failure and those treated with mechanical circulatory support. He has published numerous research abstracts, manuscripts, reviews, and book chapters and regularly presents his research at national and international meetings.
Dr. Rich is a member of the Heart Failure Society of America’s Executive Council, is a member of the International Society of Heart & Lung Transplantation, and is a Fellow of both the American College of Cardiology and Pulmonary Vascular Research Institute. He also serves as a peer reviewer for many medical journals including Circulation, the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, and the Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases, and Advanced Heart Failure and Transplantation.
