This is Coco, a cross between a Chihuahua and a Pomeranian, 9 weeks old.  She was bred by a neighbor who swears his Pomeranian is the greatest thing that ever happened to him.  I like the sable color, but hope Coco doesn't remain quite so fluffy, or we'll have to start calling her Coco Puff.  :)  My son is totally delighted.  Coco is three pounds and Augie is three years, and when Augie turns 4 in two weeks, she'll doubtless be 4 lbs.  Coco is much more his speed than the Golden Retrievers, who live outside.  Already following him all around, which I LOVE to see.  First night home went OK, with only some minor-league whining (on Coco's part) at 3 am.  Solved by a 3 am trip to the back yard, where she pooped with aplomb.

Augie thinks she should be named Smoky Coco, which is better than his first choice for her last night, Purple Grape.

Well, you know the television ad:  "Dog supplies, $315 -- little boy's first puppy, priceless."  She's pretty fun so far, but not my first puppy.  However, she IS Augie's first, and he loves it and takes his responsibility seriously.  He made me buy her a toothbrush after the vet said we had to brush her teeth (a weak point for both Pomeranians and Chihuahuas).  I'm all for it, so far he has begun to keep his small toys off the floor and also to get serious about keeping her company if she is lonely.  Very nice.

We bought some dog slippers today (like bunny slippers, except the little stuffed image on the toe is a dog's head, looking forward) and Augie walked around while Coco tried to pounce on them.  He laughed and laughed, nearly fell down every time she'd do it.

How cute!  Your son sounds like a very sweet sweet boy - it's great to see kids who are loving and gentle to their pets,  they're great kids.  ;D

She has been a great learning experience for him.  Stuff like not raising one's voice when mad is easy to point out when she reacts the way a puppy does, bowing down and rolling over if he shouts because she picked up a Hot Wheels in her mouth and ran off.  He can see immediately how she feels, and is (at 4, just barely) able to temper his response at the moment, if prompted.  I really don't know how long he'll retain active interest in brushing her teeth, but he definitely is getting repeated lessons in the consequences of less-than-gentle behavior or sounds.  She'll be teaching him that one her whole life, if needed.  I think it is more moving to him that Coco acts distressed (in fact, she's just being submissive, but *he* doesn't know that) than it ever was that the cat would just pop him one, but that might be the difference between him being 4 now and being only 2 when the cat gave him the memorable big scratch to the face.  Anyway, I'm liking what I'm seeing between them, and I had a few doubts that a kid of 4 should be given such a small dog.  We tend to run to very durable dogs in our house, like Golden Retrievers who are already fully grown when the child comes along.  :)
