It is my summer time hobby to raise butterflies. Usually they turn out to be monarchs because they are readily available and easy to raise. Preferably I like to raise just a few, but last summer the next door neighbor was clearing out her milkweed patch

In the past I've also raised black swallowtails. If you want black swallowtails in your garden, try planting dill. It usually re-seeds itself and works kind of like a weed. Female black swallowtail butterflies may find your patch and lay some eggs. Look

I love your photos. How do you hand rear the butterflies? Last summer I finally figured out what the gargantuan brown caterpillers we kept finding in our garden were - swallowtails!

If I'm lucky, I can spot a female butterfly laying her eggs. That way I can snatch them up readily and I can find out what plant the caterpillars feed on. since I am limited by a character limit, I'll try to leave a note or something.

This is a great picture. I couldn't see a female butterfly laying her eggs; my eyesight is too bad for that. Have you ever photographed the egg-laying and hatching process?

I haven't gotten either. I've seen butterflies lay eggs. it's a very quick process. She lands on a leaf, curls her abdomen over and then lays an egg on the leaf. She takes off and finds another spot. Hatching I haven't seen. Too small for my camera.
