Some how I just knew that my sister state homey would get this one!! Good job Sara !! At least I think !! I am not 100% sure. This duck had me stumped until I zoomed in the photo on my computer and saw the immature feathers. It is my guess that this is a fairly rare sighting of a Juvenile Wood duck!! Wood Ducks live in trees by the water or even in the woods. They are quite beautiful and a little strange looking when seen sitting in a tree staring down on you !! LOL!! As you can see, this duck has the "woodpecker type head" that magi was giggling about ! lol ! Certain species of Wood ducks have this type of head. This Wood(?) Duck lacks the bright color of an adult Wood Duck. Most animals in the wild look very different for the 1st 12 to 18 months of their adolescence. After I confirm that this is Indeed a Juvinille Wood Duck, I'll be returning to its nest to get some better photos!! I love rare sitings in Northern Michigan and have run into quite a few rarity's in my wanderings and travels of the backwoods!! .... BURR P.

I think you may be right about this being a juvenile wood duck. I remember my dad telling me about the wood ducks and how their heads look like a woodpecker. The body had me stumped with the young looking feathers.

LOL I thought Sara meant a wood duck as in lumber or carved duck! I know nothing about ducks!
