When it sounds like children are speaking out of context it is sometimes actually delayed echolalia. For example, in the example you provided you triggered a memorized response. Since you do not necessarily know the original context it does not make sense...

i am not familiar with the disorder. however, if he is a model student at home, you may need to take a look at what is different at school than home. for example, school is very structured with a consistent routine. the expectations are clear and consequences consistent. This is not to say that you need to run your home like a school. I'm just suggesting this...
