About Me: Male, Houston - TX, member since Nov 2007
Adventure seeker in my younger days.  I was bull riding for the adrenaline high, bungee jumping, sky diving, and pretty much anything for that adrenaline rush.  I was stepped on by a bull in the middle of my lower back when I was about 22.  This ended my bull riding.  I ... [More]   drank alot then, so didn't sober up enough to really feel the pain.  When I was about 27, I had a bad skydiving experience that reinjured my back.  It was at that time that I began taking pain killers.  So far for me, they have been the worst demon to defeat.  I used cocaine frequently when I was married to my first wife at age 23.  I also drank heavily through this marriage, as I was unhappy and felt betrayed.  I was drinking an 18 pack of beer every night and bottles of hard liquor on weekends.  Once my first marriage ended at around age 25, I quit the cocaine cold turkey and continued to drink heavily until I met my second wife.  During our dating time I slowed down the drinking, but it was around that time I had the skydiving mishap and started with the pain killers.  We married after about 1 year of dating and being engaged.  The marriage lasted all of 1 and a half years.  Turns out she is Bi-Polar, among other things and I just couldn't take the abuse.  I found out that I have degenerative disc disease with leaking and bulging discs.  Starting the pain killers prescribed by my Dr. seemed like no problem to me.  I thought that anything a Dr. gives you is fine and will make you better.  Little did I know it would lead me down a path of self destruction I had yet to travel.  So here I am, 31 and hooked on hydrocodone, lorcet, lortab, etc.  Up to 30 or more pills a day, and have decided that there has to be a better way.  I've always been a fighter (named after the Arch Angel Michael), but I have to say that this is THE hardest battle I've encountered to date.  And trust me, I've been through quite a bit.  I'm no sissy and often times welcome some pain.  It lets you know you're still alive.  However, the discs in my lower back have become unbearable, but so is the addiction.  I know that my back pain won't kill me, but the medication will.  Therefore, the medication is getting the bucket and bring on the pain.  God help me!!
