About Me: Female, 14, hollister - CA, member since Sep 2008
Well, my mom is 53, and has Hepititis C, and maybe getting the Interferon treatment, she really doesn't want to. The only reason she will is if she would be able to give my older brother a kidney... My brother is 30 and has been sick off and on since he was around 8, it ... [More] 's pretty much a miracle that he's alive.
It all started as toumors on his spine, then led to kidney failure, dialysis, surgery after surgery, gull-blatter sludge, his thyroid glands prevented calcium production ( doctors took them out), Peratinitis caused the doctors to take out most of his large intesine, some of his small intestine, some of his bowel intestines which led to the doctors giving him a Aleostymine bag. Therefore, currently caused an about 7 year old kidney transplant to fail. Now, on dialysis, has high blood pressure, which  eventually caused siezures. While in the hospital for the siezures, he had a extremely rare silent stroke, detected only by an MRI.
Mom has been through a lifetime of hardships and freak accidents, like flying through a windsheild, sliding 35 feet on her back with a 1,200 pound horse on top of her, which caused her to be in a coma for 3 days. She has bad neck, back, ankle and nerve problems. She has Rheumatoid artheritis. She's an ex-alcaholic and drug attict. Currently she has had a siezure due to few possibilities, like her withdrawl from Tramadol, or possibly overdosage of Gabapentin, or her past accidents. The MRI, EEG, and the AKG showed nothing. She has had a C-section due to being sick with Gangrene in her intestines while I was in the womb, I was born 2 months early. Ever since my mom was in 27, every 10 years for 30 years doctors would take out 6 and half feet of her small intestines, due to an unknown sickness, surprisingly they haven't removed anything since i was born 14 years ago.
As you can see, my mission is to find out if my mom recieves the Interferon treatment, and it works, if she'd be able to give my brother a kidney, therefore, I felt no need to tell 'a little about me' more the need to tell a little about them. If you can help PLEASE do so. Thank you! [Less]

My mom has Hepititis C, and is thinking of getting the Interferon treatment, but only if she can give my brother a kidney...

Rose - I think your mom keeping herself alive and healthy would be of help to your brother. HCV is curable. Though the treatment is difficult, it can be a lot better than the alternatives. Of course, whether or not to treat depends on a lot of factors individual to her situation. Best wishes - Brent

Here's a post by Dr. D. on a related topic indicating that a successfully treated patient is cured/normal. You may find this interesting. I would still like to hear his opinion on organ donation. http://www.medhelp.org/posts/show/626667

I do not want to answer your excellent question posted on the expert forum for Dr. D. but want to make sure you and your mother know that interferon treatment for HCV is not a short or simple matter. It could take years. I am not sure whether or not the disease can still be transmitted after successful treatment. That is still a controversial topic (like to see what Dr. D says). Maybe your mother should consider treatment for her own benefit regardless of ability to donate.
