How long does it take to cure a yeast infection?

So here's the deal.  Almost 2 months ago I started getting an itching sensation on my vulva.  I was freaked out that it was a STD, and finally got the guts to face the music and go see a NP who said it is very well a yeast infection on the outside of my vagina.  (I have no abnormal discharge).  She gave me a 3 day regim which seemed to cure the itchiness, but made the area more red and irritated.  So then I got more guts and finally went to a gyno who cultured the red irritated area and checked it out.  She told me that she saw nothing abnormal but saw some yeast.  So there it was confirmed.  A yeast infection of the skin surrounding my vagina.  She gave me diflucan, in on pill to take and also gave me monistat 7 to use as well.  So I took the pill 3 days ago today and have been using the cream since.  I feel better with the itching again, but at night, I think I touch the area, so when I wake up in the morning it's red again.  I feel like these treatments aren't working.
How long do I have to wait for the treatments to work.  Am I just expecting it to cure the yeast infection too soon? Is this something that takes time to heal?
It's just really irritating.  It's been almost 2 months and I would like it to go away.
Can anyone give me some insights?
Also, I got to the gym alot and wait to shower and change out of my gym clothes until I get home.  I have been obstaining from the gym since the day I went to the dr in hopes that it will help make the healing process go a little faster.
Also, I've been using Dial bar soap to clean the area, is this too strong?

I'm 38 and got my FIRST yeast infection ever ... I am a naturopath, homeopath, herbalist ... didn't know it was yeast ... figured I was chafed and had a rash from wearing skinny jeans/denim leggings I had recently bought and spent a week on the back of a motorcycle -- in which it rained most the time.  So ... tried anti-monkey butt powder, gold bond medicated powders and ointments, hydrocortizone creams, traditional chinese medicine ointments ... nope.  Mind you I had no idea what this was.  All I knew is it was as red as paprika, went from vaginal to anal area, had no bumps just itched and stung like mad.  So I googled diaper rash and a website said if it's flat red with scalloped edges, it's yeast.  Ducky.

So I went to the store, looked for anti-fungal creams with clotrimazole and micronazole ... trust me, it's what the menfolk use for jock itch but for external relief, Lotrimin (don't get the Ultra, it specifically says not for vaginal yeast infections and isn't clotrimazole) anti-fungal cream for athlete's foot and Zeasorb powder (it has the 2% micronazole). Use either or -- or use the powder during the day and the cream at night (and don't wear anything tight in the meantime).  And when the directions say spread a thin layer over it, screw that ... apply liberally, drown it!!! Just for grins and giggles I did use Monistat for 3 days but I wasn't really having issue internally, this was all from very very restrictive clothing (needless to say I'm running around in sundresses as much as possible now) but for good measure since some of the irritation was right at the vaginal opening, I used it anyway.  It's taken a little over a month to get it cleared up but it's cheap, convenient and effective -- as well as discreet.  So for those of you who live at home and don't want your parents to know ... you can go to Rite-Aid, pick it up without prescription and no one is the wiser.

Best to you,
MKC

My first yeast infection was a reaction from antibiotics that I was taking for Bacteria Vaginosis (BV):  I had recently began to have unprotected sex with my then boyfriend now husband and I immediately noticed a fishy smell and minor burning when I urinated a day or so later.  Concerned I scheduled an appointment with my gyno for a STD screening and was informed that I did not have an STD but that I had BV, I was livid because I was sure that it was contracted though sex but my gyno informed me that it could have been a number of things that contributed me contracting the infection like for instance (baths, douching, change in soap or laundry detergent).  I was given a prescription for Metronidazole to take twice a day for 7 days, I finished the medication on a Tuesday morning by Wednesday night I had the nastiest yeast infection.  My vulva was swollen and red and the inching was non stop I for sure thought it was an STD by now so I scheduled another appointment with my gyno and was told that I had a yeast infection which was most likely a reaction to the antibiotics.  Antibiotics kill bacteria including the good ones that control yeast, I was prescribed 1 Fluconazole 150 MG tablet and was cured in 5 days.

Over the years following I would ALWAYS get a yeast infection when I take any kind of antibiotics and at one point I was having problems with my kidneys and every time I finished and antibiotic I would get these horrible yeast infections so I came up with a regimen that worked:

The whole time that I'm taking antibiotics I would inject 2 tablespoons of plain organic yogurt in my vagina everynight before bed the when I awake I would prepare a douche with 1 quart of water and 2 tbs of raw organic apple cider vinegar.  I would also eat 2 servings of plain yogurt and take garlic pills in addition to my daily vitamins and once I'm done with the antibiotics I would have NO yeast infection :))...

I am 15 and 2 months ago i had a nasal infection the antibiotics caused me 2 get a yeast infecton ( i refused to eat yogurt which i was directed to eat). I am 2 embarrased to go  a doctor or inform my guardians, so i researched itt and i am currently using revolting yogurt to be rid of it. Take a tampon and flavor free yogurt, smother the tampon in the yogurt and insert the tampon. I have been doing this 4 a week and i no longer am having a discharge.

Try some A& D ointment on the area so the pee won't sting.  Go and get Monistat cream for 7 days. Do not put soap in the vasginal area. Wear loose clothing and keep yourself dry and clean. Do not wear underwear to bed at night, area needs to breath. Yeast grows in dark wet areas. Eat yogurt and get acidophilus from the vitamin store. Refrain from sex. Good luck I am going thru it right now myself after being on antibiotics. :)
