MYTH: HIV Is Commonly Spread Through Blood Transfusions

For a few years before modern blood tests were developed, HIV was occasionally spread by blood transfusion, or by transplantation of organs from infected persons. However, modern blood testing is extremely effective in keeping contaminated blood and organs safe and almost no such cases have occurred in the U.S. or other industrialized countries for more than 20 years.
