Weight Gain with Type 2 Meds: Why?

Rating

A diabetes expert shares some advice.

I thought my diabetes medications would help me lose a few pounds — instead I gained 5! I eat pretty well and exercise … what’s up?

It can be frustrating to eat well and exercise regularly, only to add on pounds. There are several kinds of glucose-lowering medications. Some classes, or groups, of glucose-lowering medications are associated with weight gain; common examples include drugs within the class known as insulin sensitizers, such as metformin, and insulin itself. Others support moderate weight loss, and still others have no effect on weight. Discuss your concerns with your healthcare provider, who may be able to change your medications or reduce your current dose. If, after that conversation, you both decide it’s best to stay on your current treatment, be confident that your healthy habits are still benefiting your body. By eating well, you’re preventing additional weight gain and reducing your risk of other chronic health problems. Every time you exercise, you’re helping your body to use insulin better. In fact, some studies have found that regardless of actual weight loss, incorporating regular exercise into your daily life can help improve your body's sensitivity to insulin. For weight-loss advice specific to your needs, see a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) who is also a certified diabetes educator (CDE). An RDN/CDE can assess your current diet, food preferences, medical history, health goals, and more to guide your food choices for the best management of both your diabetes and your weight.
