Healthier School Lunches for Kids

Skip: Nasty Nachos

Kids might crave this crunchy, gooey dish, but the nacho basket under the heat lamp in their cafeteria is likely loaded with fat and sodium. In just six to eight nachos, you’ll find more than half of kids’ recommended daily intake of total fat and 43 percent of the daily upper limit for sodium (which, in excess, is linked with increased blood pressure in children and adolescents). Fast food-style nacho cheesy sauce has less than half the protein of an ounce of cheddar cheese. Nutritional value? Not so much. Try this alternative.
