Avoid Secondhand Smoke

Avoid Secondhand Smoke

There are at least 69 chemicals in cigarette smoke that are known to cause cancer — and you can be exposed to them even if you don’t smoke. Each year, more than 3,000 nonsmoking adults die of lung cancer as a result of breathing in secondhand smoke, either from a smoker’s exhale or from the fumes of a lit cigarette. Many states have laws banning smoking in public places like restaurants, bars or the workplace. If your state doesn’t support this ban, try to avoid patronizing places that allow indoor smoking. Maintain a smoke-free household and car, and encourage others you spend time with to do the same.
