Mental Stimulation: Learn a Language

When it comes to nurturing your noggin, say "Bonjour!" to becoming bilingual. In a 2011 study, Toronto researchers found that speaking two languages may help to delay the onset of Alzheimer's symptoms in participants — bilingual particpants exhibited the same symptoms as unilingual ones despite having nearly twice the amount of brain damage due to the disease. Switching between two languages challenges the brain and enhances neural network pathways, which may help the brain compensate when Alzheimer's affects some of those pathways.
