What Happens During a Stroke?

Hemorrhagic Strokes

Hemorrhagic Strokes

Hemorrhagic strokes are less common than Ischemic strokes—just 13 percent of stroke victims suffer them. However, they’re usually more serious than ischemic strokes. Hemorrhagic strokes are responsible for more than 30 percent of stroke-related deaths.

Hemorrhagic strokes occur when a blood vessel in the brain bursts or leaks, due to uncontrolled high blood pressure or weak spots in your blood vessel walls (called aneurysms). The blood pools, surrounding and damaging the brain tissue.
