You deserve a big bear hug!
Hi Claire
Yes, that is the best thing we can do for ourselves is stay free of stress. I know that's what started my merry-go-around with GD. The city I grew up in, Portland, Oregon out west, had a wonderful zoo. When I got my first drivers license I would go there at least once a week. I know your boys must enjoy it very much. The closest zoo to where I am now is about 400 miles west so I've not been there. I hope you are feeling well today, I am.
Hugs

I sent a note earlier but it seems to have deleted. My prayers go out to you also for good health and a speedy recovery (remission) from this disease.

Doing great here and I hope you are too. You will do fine down the road with whatever comes. We have to be strong, we are in control, not graves'. It snowed so pretty here yesterday at the beach. It's rare and we got about 4 inches.
Take care, big hugs.

You deserve a big bear hug!  I hope you never have to have this surgery.  But if you ever do  I know you can do it.  My husband dragged me to surgery the first time.  and the 2nd and 3rd.  I am not strong at all.  I just know I had to do this .  Thursday night I was begging my 24 year old grandaughter to not make me go.  Pitiful on my part.  But my kids and grandkids are so use to me clowning around and playing tricks they thought I was joking.  Maybe that was a good thing huh?

Well it is over now and I think this is the last of it.  I love my doc. but won't miss his surgery room at all.  When I go in next Friday for follow up I am telling the whole staff i will miss them but GOOOOD BY.

Ireland is a beautiful place from pictures I've seen. I am on the mid-coast of North Carolina, USA. I hope you are doing well. I'm still dealing with double vision and will be for some time until my numbers level out for at least 6 months. In about a year I will be able to get surgery on the eye muscles to hopefully take away the DV.
Have a wonderful day, it's raining here today :-)

Just a quick note to say hi! Hi Claire! I am doing ok. Miserably uncomfortable but good. My peanut is still breech and shows no signs of turning according to my dr. They are finally scheduling my c-section on the 15th. I am having Horrible night sweats too. Is that normal for 35 weeks? I mean I am waking up drenched and having to change my pj's atleast twice a night.

Nice to meet you!  Kat

(Stupid 800 character limit!) Yes, I can go outside without having my eyes tear up.  My main issue was with dry and irritated eyes, so I'm glad they DO produce tears now.  And they look good.  They look "normal".  Of course, I barely remember what normal was, since I've had GED since the age of 11, and I'm 60 now!  You're young, and unless the doctor just wants to wait and see if your eyes settle down, I can't understand why there would be much resistance to exploring the possible benefits of orbital decompression.  Ask for an explanation.  If it's just "risk", ask to talk to a surgeon who does this particular operation for a living.  Ask his/her opinion of the risk involved. Find out his/her track record with the surgery. It's worth pursuing!

Claire:  I had bilateral orbital decompression surgery in September.  Several years ago, I had asked about it and was told that the surgery was "too risky", but this year it was actually recommended by both my ophthalmologist and my retina specialist.  I would request a second opinion and talk to a surgeon who specializes in this procedure.  S/he may be able to reassure you about expected outcomes and risks.  There's ALWAYS risk with surgery, but techniques have improved in recent years, and maybe your doctor just isn't aware of the number of decompression surgeries that have been done successfully.  In any case, a second or even a third opinion, and a surgical consult, won't hurt anything. I have a LITTLE double vision that can be fixed, and I am VERY happy with the outcome.

Hi Claire - To answer your questions, though my eye surgeon took a photo on my first visit (June '07), I don't have my own before and after photos. The protrusion in my left eye was more pronounced than my right, though both eyes were affected by this disease. In addition to the protrusion, I had double vision and dry and irritated eyes. Eye muscle surgery fixed the double vision, though my eyes are still dry and irritated and are sensitive to light. I use lubricating drops and gels and wear sunglasses much more than an average person would. I don't mind the inconvenience considering how far I've come. I'm so happy with the results of these treatments!  Pat

I got your note, Claire. I am fine. I had orbital decompression surgery on 7/29 and eye muscle surgery on 12/1. Neither surgery was difficult and recovery wasn't hard either. I see better now than I have in almost 2 years. Maybe a 2nd opinion is called for in your case. I'm not sure why being in your late 20's would preclude having surgery for Graves Eye Disease. (It never hurts to have a 2nd opinion anyway.) You'll get through this well. Teaching myself about the disease was the most important thing I did. Take care - Pat S.

You deserve a big bear hug!
Good early morning from the Crystal Coast! My day yesterday was one of those "can't wake up" days. All I wanted to do was sleep but made myself stay up til 9 watching "Philidelphia", Tom Hanks. Now insomnia lol, this disease sure takes over your life. I only thought I had mood swings growing up, this is entirely different, you don't know one few minutes to the next what your system is going to turn into. At tiimes I miss the support of a husband but then again, would I run him off with my rages, rants and "leave me alone" attitude? My poor dog just tries to keep out of my way, he senses when it's a bad day.
Here's hoping to a calm hurricane season again and a cure for this %$#% GD.
Have a wonderful day Claire
