i am an addict. i was addicted to pain pills for over six years. i believe addiction is a disease. i became an addict by taking to much iv pain meds after a surgery that went bad.

i had a gastric bypass to lose weight. i weighed 275 pounds in 2003. in feb 2003 i had surgery. the doctor that preformed the surgery cut my pancreas. i was in alot of pain. the doctor gave me iv demerol for two weeks every three hours need it or not. i was not educated about drugs at that point. after 5 surgeries in one year i was addicted. i was up to 30 hydros or lortab a day. This was almost impossible for me to keep up. i was doc shopping and buying off the street at the end. thank god i can say the end without being dead which i damn near killed my body. I would try to taper. i tried to give my pills to my husband to give to me so i would not take 10 pills at a time(7.5mg). i tried all types of things i even asked my 17 year old son to ask me every night how many i took so it would make me feel bad and just maybe i would stop. my son hates drugs(due to my addiction) My husband and both my boys would tell me i was killin myself but because of the disease my mind would not take that. thank god i took a leap of faith and went to treatment. i am clean today due to treatment and meetings. i was not able to do this on my own. i almost killed myself with klonophin and xanax (i would use when i was out of hydros) these benzos were very addictive and made my wd's worse. at this point i read these post and it helps me to stay clean. i do believe that relapse can and does happen. i try to keep other addicts in my life so i wont forget where i came from.
