Thanks for trying Sara!! It is beautiful. I wonder what it would look like under a black light??!! .. Flash-backing again!! Sorry!! lol !! I found a few patches of these growing near a swampy area, so my guess is it is aquatic. Purple and violet aquatic plants spell trouble to me, as quite a few are highly poisonous!! ....
Always the bizarre and pretty ones that are deadly!! lol!! I won't rest till I find the name of this plant !!!!! Arrrgh !! :o) ~Burrrrrr
did you find the name ? I need to get a Book on identifying flowers and put names to mine.. looking through yours you have helped me to begin :) deadly our not it is a very striking flower..
Still stumped Lesa!! lol... Thinking a type of African Violet maybe. I'm going to submit it to Davesgarden.com
Someone there will know. :o) ----- I use both the Audubon society's and the Peterson field guides to eastern wildflowers mostly. --- Of course you would need the western wildflower editions of either one.
The Peterson guide is considered a better guide, but if the truth be known, they both have their strong points. They both run around $20 a piece. A good price considering the wealth of information and full color photographs they contain.
Half the fun of finding plants and flowers is identifying them with your trusty field guide, taking notes and reading about how the colonist's as well as the various Indian tribes used them as food, tea, spice, medicinal purposes, etc, etc. :o)
Submitted flower to Davesgarden.com and found it was "Bugleweed" (Ajuga reptans) which is both an escapee from a garden as I thought, as well as poisonous water loving plant.
I guess it is planted as ground cover and is incredibly hearty, being able to survive zone 3. The mystery still remains on how it escaped this far to the forest since it propagates though its root system or by division. ~ Burr
