Testing

My daughter is prescribed ritalin and takes it at school. The doctor did a Urinalysis  test and sent the sample to yhe lab. Well that didn't end so well because ritalin didn't show up in her system at all. Thank god that the day of the appointment she had school or it wouldn't have looked so good on me. They were going to take her off her meds cuZ they accused her of abusing them and not having enough left when she came in for her first ever urinalysis and that must have been why it came up positive. I was absolutely outraged. Once she remembered that the schools give the meds, she knew better then that. She has no explanation as to why it didn't show up. All she said is the tests aren't ever wrong. Anyways I also know of a couple other ppl that the same thing has happened to as well. I wonder if it is possible to show up because I have never heard from a person that was able to tell me that they were able to pass a test for ritalin. I have done some research on the Internet but I was hoping someone on here would have experienced testing for Ritalin and can tell me they there story.

Thanks

Stimulant medications include both: amphetamines (e.g., Adderall) and methylphenidate (Ritalin). The later doesnt show on a standard 5-panel test. Your daughter's doctor should be well aware of this unless they slept through pharmacology!!!!

Since your doc apparently needs some continuing ed on the topic. Let them k ow there is a SPECIFIC test you can order to actually detect the correct medication. Its called a "Ritalin (Methylphenidate) Urine Drug Test" (imagine that.) And again, this test is NOT part of the standard  urinalysis (drug screen).

Well, I have included some links that have info.  A summary would be that they should stay in system for up to 48 hours, but drinking Orange juice or similar thing will speed up the elimination (I have also read that elsewhere).  But, it depends on the med.  regular ritalin will be eliminated faster than the SR version.  And, it is also pretty common for a child(?) to not go to the nurse for the med.

Apparantly, the doctor is questioning the speed at which your daughter goes through her meds?   Pretty easy to keep track of what is sent to the school (call the nurse) and what you have at home.   An easier answer is to switch to Concera or Vyansse and take it once in the morning where you have total control.
Any way, you look at it, you need to have a talk with the doctor.  This should be able to be controlled without urine tests.
