A lot of major dental work and surgery needed immed. after detox?

If anyone has had an absess one a tooth and have severe,excrutiating throbbing that barely viocodin could get rid off, which is best for facial and tooth pain only know what Im talking about. I have had many painful surgeries and hated and still hate pain meds. I was only on them for my severe ,debilitating, I.C. pain and Vulvodynia.  No wonder the docs and nurses kept saying dexing I was a very, very brave girl.  i never and still do have NO problem stopping pain meds only is absoulte nessassary! I am just worried about me needed multiple crowns , fillings, 2 extractions, bone surgery to the teeth that needs inplants. I am worrying that the meds won't work at all. I have been now thank god been praying and praying to not being in pain so i can get through this. i need good advice. i posted already in sub. abuse but really didn't get the response i needed. please help and pray for me!

I always use ibuprofen. It frankly works better than opiates, if you ask me (with dental), and I've had some serious dental work done, so I know. Just megadose it (like 600-800 mg) and it should take the edge right off.

WELL  I DIDN'T HAVE DOC CHOICE. I HATE PAIN MEDS AND THE WAY THEY MAKE ME. I HAVE NEVER GOTTEN HIGH OFF THEM EITHER. MY DAD IS LIKE THAT TOO. HE DOESN'T LIKE ANYTHING THAT MAKES YOU FEEL NOT YOUESELF. THATS ME. BUT, THE EXCRUCIATING PAIN I HAVE HAD WITH MY INTERSTITIAL CYSTIS AND VULVODYNIA, I WAS LOSING MY MIND AND SCREAMING IN PAIN AND THEY STARTED ME ON LOSE DOES OF VICODIN AND ADVIL AN OTHER BLADDER MEDS THAT R NOT ADDICTIVE. I AM SCARED OF ALL DRUGS. I WOULD ITCH AND THROW UP TAKING VICODIN IN THE BRGINNING. COULD NOT EVER TO THIS DAY TAKE PERCOCET. I WAS ON VICODIN OFF AND ON FOR A FEW YEARAND OF COURSE MY BRAIN BECAME TOLERANT TO IT. IN MARCH I WENT TO SEE A SPECIALIST IN PAIN MANAGEMENT AN HE HATED VICODIN SO HE PUT ME ON ANOTHER DRUG OPANA AND I HATED IT THEN A SMALL DOSE OF OXYCONTIN AN I REALY HATED IT. THEN I HAD A PROCEDURE THAT WAS VERY PAINFUL AND TOOK AWAWY 75 TO 80% OF THE PAIN AND I WANTED OFF SO HE PUT ME ON 7GMCG OF FENTANYL SO I COULD FINISH MY SUMMER SCHOOL THAT ENDED JULY 22ND AND THE FENTANYL WAS WEARING OFF EVERY 2 WEEKS FOR SOME REASON AND I WOULD START HAVING W/D AND I WAS IN SCHOOL EVERY DAY. SO IT WAS RAISED UP TO 100MCG THEN OT 125MCG AND JUST DAYS BEFORE I WAS GOING TO DETOX WENTO 150MCG. ON THE 22ND I TOOK MY FINAL EXAM AND THE NEXT DAY WENT TO A CRAPPY 3 DAY DETOX. I THOUGHT ALL THIS WOULD BE OVER IN LESS THAN A WEEK. I WAS TOLD NOTHING AT ALL AND WHAT THIS DOES TO MY BODY. MY REG. DENIST ONLY GIVE VICODIN THATS IT, SHE YOUNG AND BARELY GIVES IT OUT. THE ORAL SURGEON WHO WILL DO THE EXTRACTIONS AND INPLANT WILL PROBABLY PUT ME UNDER IV SEDATION LIKE SHE DID 8 YEARS AGO AND I WAS IN SEVERE PAIN WITH DRY SOCKETS TOO B/C I KEPT THROWING UP FROM THE VICODIN. SO THER U  GO. I KNOW MY ****. I JUST HOPE WITH ALL THIS WORK THE PAIN MED WILL WORK AND I WON'T BE IN A LOT OF PAIN.

i am vey lucky to have a pair of dentists i like to go to since 1992. i wish i could find a doctor i liked as much. i have had multiple crowns with no problems. i had my wisdom teeth pulled (by someone else) in 2002 and had a dry socket which took a week to clear up but used ice and ibuprofen for the pain. also had 3 root canals with no additional pain meds. biggest dental work was pulling a lower front tooth and then adding a 4 tooth bridge (which meant filing down the other 3 teeth). my tooth puller gave me vocodine but my dentist just said ibuprofen after filing the teeth and adding the temporary bridge. i never used the vicodine. all i had was novacaine, some relaxing music, and i put vicks vapor rub under my nose so i didn't have to smell the grinding.

until 1992 i dreaded going to dentists because of an early teen experience. i'm not saying you will be as lucky as i am but the pain you are anticiapting may be worse than what you will actually experience.

Hi there,
I am obsessive/compulsive so when I went to my doctor the 2nd time addicted to percs and oxys I was terrified if one day when I need pain meds what would happen. She 1st asked me if I was going to intentionally hurt myself which of course I wouldn't. We put a plan together so I could feel better and not obsess about it.
1st if I ever need surgery she will give me demoral or morphine by IV in the hospital. I will never be given anything related to percs or oxy. Depending on my pain level she will rx me demoral, T3's or morphine and only my mother will be allowed to pick it up for me. My mother has a safe and the only key and that is where my meds will go. I will be given it one at a time as perscribed. If it's 1 every 6 hours then my mom will hand me 1 every 6 hours. This way I have the meds I need and won't have the ability to abuse them as my mother will watch me take it and I won't be able to bite or chew it.
So my advice to you is to get a script that is a narcotic but not your DOC, have someone hold onto it and lock it away until it's time to take it.
I know a lot of addicts refuse narcotics of any kind but it is possible for an addict to safely take opiotes for real pain if you have a plan going in.
I understand your fear about having built up such a tolerance they may not work but I believe, and so does my doctor that you have built up a tolerance to your DOC only. Demoral is given a lot for dental surgery so if your DOC was vicodine then that will probably not work for your pain, but a different kind of med will.
I don't know if that's helpful but I know how it feels to stress about this issue and feel much better after talking and planning with my doctor.

OH I WILL NEVER TAKE THE STRONG STUFF AGAIN. LIKE MORPHINE. JUST NEED A LOT OF PRAYERS AND AM HAVING A PROBLEM CALMING DOWN. IM WORKING MYSELF UP TOO MUCH! IF I HAVE TO AKE VICODIN IT WONT BE LONG AND IT WILL BE CONTROLLED.

I don't know what to tell you to take that isn't a narcotic, If you want a narcotic tell your dentist to give you Demerol or morphine, that would get rid of the pain, but they are a lot stronger than vicodin and then you would have to start over after all your surgeries, bone grafts, etc and detox again which I think would be hard on these two because they are a lot stronger... sorry don't feel like I helped much... will keep you in my prayers, Karen
