'Bonfire Night'

I was talking with Dominosara and mentioning that it was Bonfire night here and its interesting to hear about other places celebrations. I understand Bonfire night isnt celebrated in the US but its made me think about other days in which people celebrate different occassions.

Guy Fawkes Night (bonfire night) is celebrated in Britain annually on November 5th. The event is accompanied by firework displays, the lighting of bonfires and the ceremonial effigy-burning of one Guy Fawkes. The origin of this celebration stems from events which took place in 1605 and was a conspiracy known as "The Gunpowder Plot," intended to take place on November 5th of that year (the day set for the opening of Parliament). The object of The Gunpowder Plot was to blow up English Parliament along with the ruling monarch, King James I. It was hoped that such a disaster would initiate a great uprising of English Catholics, who were distressed by the increased severity of penal laws against the practice of their religion.

I know you guys celebrate 4th July, but not sure if you celebrate other days and if so, what are they for? Like Thanksgiving! Whats that for? I know i could look it up on the net, but just thought it would be interesting to hear what everyone has to say about it and other days you may celebrate.

I guess your BonFire Night and what it's based on is loosely portrayed in the movie V....with Natalie Portman right?  In any event, a bonfire is always nice...

Thanks so much for explaining that holiday to me. I was just re-reading my all time favorite Adrian Mole diaries series and he mentions a bonfire every November 5th. Just a few days ago, I thought I'd look into it (finally) and check out what the reason is for the celebration. You've done that for me, thanks!

Oh we have so many holidays here!!!  I remember one we have in May.  On May 1 it is called May Basket day.......when we were kids we would take disposable cups and fill it with candy and popcorn.  We would then take the cups and place them at peoples doors and ring the doorbell and run.  The object was never to get caught.  It was alot of fun as my old neighborhood had lots of kids so we had to get our timing right so we didnt run into each other!!!  I have no clue why the holiday was started!!!!
