El_em_en_oh Update - Not Doing Well

Here is this morning's update from LMNO's wife.  Please keep those prayers coming for both of them.  :-(
***********************************

Sorry for the lack of an update. It’s been a rough week.

I have some bad news regarding Carl’s status. Since his 2nd procedure, he’s been running a fairly high-grade fever (100-102), and have been on numerous/various & assorted antibiotics to fight the infection that they knew was in there, but couldn’t pin-point. Apparently, running a fever post surgical-procedure isn’t all that uncommon, and it usually goes away in a day or 2. If you remember the LAST surgery Carl had, he ran an unexplained fever of 100 for 3 days, which went away suddenly, and THEN he could go home. They just don’t let you go home when you’re running a fever, is all I’m trying to say here.

Anyway, they grew concerned about his long-term high fever yesterday so ran a battery of different test, and his urologist came in last night and broke the news that Carl, somewhere along the line, acquired a Staph infection. “Staph Aureus” I believe it’s the exact name and precisely what it’s called. According to the doctors, it’s a fairly common hospital-acquired infection, but what’s bad about this particular ‘strain’ is that it’s somewhat drug-resistant. They immediately started him on a round of Vancomycin (as he’s allergic to Penicillin) and will test again this morning to see if they’re making any progress. The doctors say that it’s a fairly common post-surgical infection, so we have hopes that they’ll wipe it out sooner rather than later.

It’s been a long week and I really don’t feel like typing, but you get the jist of what’s going on with him. All in all, not great news and not where we wanted to be right now (we were supposed to go home today). There IS some risk of kidney-failure, at this point, but we’re trying not to think about it, and we don’t even want to THINK about the 10%-20% death-rate (but that’s only if it starts to cause multiple complications and the Vancomycin doesn’t work).

Sorry guys… looks like he’s going to be in here a little while longer.

He is very proud of her.  So nice to see that in this day and age.  Their dogs are so beautiful.  Maybe the hospital would allow visits, after all they are family!!!  Animals are very theraputic........Again, thanks jaybay for the updates.             sara

sarah - I think Mrs. LMNO is doing as well as anyone in this situation.  She really is an incredible person and knowing both of them now it's easy to see why they're married.  They both have that same kind of wry sense of humor and a keen perceptive of life in general which makes for some really interesting conversations.

Mrs. LMNO has been pretty much living at the hospital for the past week, but she does take breaks every day to go home and spend some time with their critters.  They've got 6 dogs (love it!) and are blessed to have a couple who offers in-house dog-sitting services.  Having been in this situation as a patient myself, knowing that my critters are well taken care of makes a huge difference in stress levels.  There's also nothing like a dog for talk therapy, so imagine what you get from six!  They're great sympathetic listeners.  :-)
