Jeeeze, is that right! That's messed up, truly it is!!!
The thing I liked (sarcastic of course) was the same company that makes zohydro is the same company that makes and sells vivitrol !! what a win win for this company .They get all of the money and create the addict, then they get a 1000+ per shot for the opiate blocking cure !!
"Only when PEOPLE are placed before PROFITS will a meaningful change occur". I concur!!!
This is shocking, I can't get there from the link but did a little search and found some info myself, I have one word, SCARY!!! Or two words, GREEDY FUKTARDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Kbusymom.....THANK YOU SO MUCH for posting this!!!
I had heard rumblings about Zohydro...but hadn't read the outcome until you posted this. I read the whole dang article and was filled with the very same feelings you expressed! Just OUTRAGE!! UNBELIEVABLE to ME!!!
Here's some of what I pulled out of it:
Zohydro is about 10 times stronger than hydrocodone. It has no acetaminophen in it at all..it also does NOT have an "abuse deterrent" in it.
The abuse of OxyContin was dramatically improved when Big Pharma was forced to add an abuse deterrent to the chemical makeup of the drug. Proving that formulating a tamper-proof form of OxyContin cut down on it's horrific abuse.
Zohydro and OxyContin are both designed as ER (extended release) only to be taken every 8-12 hrs.
If children take this new Zohydro....it could be toxic and kill them.
Here's what happened.....there was an advisory panel appointed to review ALL aspects of approving Zohydro. This advisory panel's recommendation to the FDA was completely ignored. There was a LANDSLIDE vote by the FDA...11-2 with 1 abstention vote to APPROVE this new drug Zohydro!!!!!! The FDA went AGAINST what the advisory panel's findings were.
Big Pharma and powerful lobbyists and $$$$$ have won out over true concern for the people of our nation.
The FDA said "we could not NOT approve Zohydro" ???????
What could the FDA possibly mean that they "could not NOT approve Zohydro or delay approval until a tamper-proof form was developed." ????
Some hogwash justification was attempted by saying acetaminophen in hydrocodone causes liver toxicity and this new drug was acetaminophen-free. Doesn't matter that it is 10X STRONGER!!!!
Also....get this, "while liver toxicity from acetaminophen is indeed a problem, fewer than 250 Americans die annually from it due to aceta-opioid combinations. Meanwhile, more than 16,000 died in 2011 of prescription opioid overdoses with the numbers climbing."
And get this...In 2011 pharma giant Alkermes bought the division of Elan that produces Zohydro. And guess who also produces Vivitrol (an opiate blocker on the market designed to treat addiction to prescription pain killers (at an average of $15,000 per addict/year)??? So they are working it from both ends....get 'em addicted.....and then sell 'em the opiate blocker Vivitrol to get them off the opiates we sold 'em!!!!!! Talk about financial GREED!!!
Definition of GREED: an intense and selfish desire for wealth/power.
The rehab and addiction recovery world is going bonkers about this!!! Can you imagine a drug that is 10 times stronger than hydrocodone with no acetaminophen in it? Easy to slam/shoot....easy to snort....easy to overdose? No abuse deterrent?
A man who runs a sober recovery operation in Massachusetts had this to say....and I agree completely:
"Only when PEOPLE are placed before PROFITS will a meaningful change occur".
Girl, you are to smart for your own good! Lol! Is that what the article said? (I still havent read it yet)! Those are some staggering statistics..
WOW!!!
"12 million people (one in every 20 in the U.S. age 12 and older) in 2010 used prescription painkillers non-medically. This staggering number produced 16,651 opioid overdose deaths that year (more than 45 a day) - more OD deaths than from heroin and cocaine combined and up from 4,030 in 1999.
There were also 885,348 emergency hospitalizations from overdoses in 2011 vs. 289,498 in 2004.
The total cost in health care from painkiller abuse: $72.5 billion.
The costs of the average worker’s compensation claim in 2011: $13,000. The cost of a claim related to long term painkillers such as Oxy: $39,000."
The article is so long, I haven't read it all. I meant to share a different one, oh well. Still scary stuff.
Nope, never have but I am going to read it.. Thanks for sharing
No, I've never heard of it, and it's very long article. But, I'm going to read it. Thanks Kbusymom.
