I thing honesty is best with kids. How great was your story and I bet you and your son will continue to laugh about this.
Ok -- well I had a funny situation with my 11 yr old son the other day --- that gave the two of us a great laugh.. Hopefully it translates here for you so you can get a laugh out of it as well... Firstly, I need to give a quick background so the story works so here it is... In my efforts to get and stay clean from my pill addiction I told my kids of my addiction early on in my recovery.. I did this so they are 1) aware of the dangers of drugs 2) I felt it necessary from an accountability stand point.... At the time it was awkward but in retrospect it was a great decision on my part.. I only told them what a 9yr old and 11 yr old needed to know, so they can witness the positive changes in me and know why... With that said it's not something we all sit down and discuss everyday but now they know the deal and it just simply makes this whole process easier for a number of reasons..One more piece of background is that I am and always will be someone who can find humor in anything and my son inherited that trait from me.. Ok, so now to the funny story. The other night I'm helping my son study for a spelling/vocabulary test, so he hands me a stack of of index cards to quiz him with. I start whipping through these and he is doing great, spelling each word then giving the definition and using the word in a sentence -- it was great he was knocking it out the the park.. Then I see the word "addiction" pop up, man I turned white, I have to say I was close to skipping it but I didn't, but I did hesitate and my son who what on a roll as well as wanting to finish so he can move onto his xbox said, "come on next word dad" hesitating again I looked up at him and said the word " addiction".. It hung out there for a second then all of a sudden we both smiled and just
LAUGHING our ***** off!!! I mean it was a deep belly laugh from the both of us, the kind of laugh that you can't control. After a minute of laughing we tried to gain our composure but as soon as I started saying the word again we started laughing again... I mean it was hilarious, I think we were both thinking about the comedy of the sentence he was going to use with the word and the prospect of writing a sentence like "My Dad has an ADDICTION to pills" or "My dad was sick for a week because he was going through withdrawals from his pill ADDICTION" and then imagined the look on his teachers face when she would read the sentence.. I mean it was so funny but also therapeutic.. It just goes to show that yes addiction is a very serious sickness but humor is and always WILL BE A GREAT MEDICATION for not only addiction but many things in life.. So anyway, I really appreciate your post because just writing this has made me laugh so even if my post doesn't translate into how funny it was for me, I hope it was able to at least bring a smile to you.. THANKS!
