Methadone Detoxification

How long does it take to detoxify from methadone?  My son is on his second day of lockdown detoxification in a medical facility which is familiar with methadone.  He is constantly on my mind and my prayers are with him.  I could use some education on methadone to help me cope and help my son.

A concerned mom!!

You are a very wise person; you have been my anchor through my son's journey!!  Your words WE CAN NEVER GO BACK, JUST AHEAD have saved me; I will never foget your saying, it gave me the strength to carry on through my worst vulnerable times;;;Thank you from the bottom of my heart and God bless you!!!

I have been reading alot of the postings since Nov. 18th.

It seems like another place and another time.

My son came home from rehab yesterday.  He looks so good and healthy and clean; God has truly blessed us; this is the best Xmas. gift we could ever get!!!

I hope he can manage, but I get the impression most rehabs don't take into account the physical side of the withdrawals...which is why the relapse rate is so high. After the two weeks of hard withdrawals you tend to feel weak as a newborn babe for weeks, months. there's a lot of info on here that can help him with treatment for this side of it.

Also..do remember that this whole addiction thing is a part of him now. We can never go back, just on. Try to look all through this to see that the son you once had is still really there underneath all this.

Hi Robin

Thank you for the kind words.  I am glad to hear that you are back on track with the methadone addiction.

Methadone is the most addictive drug we have today.  According to the Dr.s at the Mathadone Clinic that my son attended the relapse rate is very high. They were not very opptimistic with my son's withdrawal.  I just hope and pray that they are wrong and my son can overcome this ball and chain in his life.

I have to remind myself that addiction is a disease; noone chooses to become addicted.  We all have some sort of addiction when you think about it.  Mine is caffiene and cigarettes!!

Hang in There; you are a great freedom fighter just like my son

Hi, I'm glad your son is doing better.  I just got done with a methadone detox.  I was on it for eight years.  I also had to taper down to 30milligrams.  I relapesed after 36 days.  I'm back at the beginning but doing well.  It is one of the hardest drugs to detox from so hang in there.
take care Robin

Hi; just doing an update on my son's condition.

He is doing very well with his withdrawal according to the councillors at the detox centre.  He has been sedated and sleeps most of the time.  He is aroused to take a shower and eat his meals.

Tomorrow he will be discharged from the detox centre and admitted directly to a rehab centre for 28 days in treatment.  He will continue on the meds he is on now for his withdrawal symptoms.

Left a message for him today telling him that I love him and want him back home as my son that I know and raised; not the one that has the addiction!!

I was told that relapse is part of recovery; I have to believe that.  To all of you never give up the fight.

Like my son, you need to do this journey on your own and drive your own bus.

I am taking care of myself because I have to stay strong for my son when he asks for my help.

Bye for now,

concerned mom

Full withdrawals last for about two weeks. The secondary symptoms vary in length, but don't last more than a year or two tops unless the neurological damage is permanent.

My son has been on the methodone program for approximately two years.  He had a severe back injury and was prescribed morphine; however, he became addicted to the morphine so he was put on methadone for the pain at approx. 200mgs per day.

He has been lowering his dosage over the past year and was down to 30 mg per day.  He had to be at this dosage for medical withdrawal intervention.  He is on clonidine, ativan and what ever he will need to help him through the next two days.

He has no contact with the outside world right now.  Not until Monday when he should be feeling better.   My youngest son is with him right now; he was also on methadone and detoxed on his own so he knows what his brother is going through.

We live in Canada; hanging in there

Hi Mom!

It really does depend on the miligrams he was on and the length of time he was taking it.

The good news is that he under medical supervision.

Hope to see you post again and let us know how he is doing..and you, or course.
