Please help! pregnant and addicted to tramadol!

Hello! I am 9 weeks pregnant and addicted to tramadol! And I just wanted to see if there is anyway possible to stop cold turkey safely? I have been taking 50 ml tramadol for 4-5 years @ about 10-12 a day for fibro & TMJ. I have been trying to do this cold turkey stuff for about 2 days now and Im about to loss it! The only reason im trying to stop is because this little life inside of me that i really care about! And before anyone say " why don't you talk to the doc that has been prescribing them" please understand that was the first place i went! And unfortunately, my insurance changed and he doesn't want to even talk to me! I talked to his nurse who in turn relayed the message to him and had her call me back the next morning and said " he would like you to stop taking the medicine cold"! ?????????? And another doctor I talked to of course would be my obgyn, ha! He told me to speak with the doctor that prescribed them and he does not deal with that!!!!!!! Capital W.O.W!!!!!!! SO..... Back to square one. Hence me spilling my guts on this forum! I'm ready about to lose it guys. I really, really, really need help I don't know where to turn or to start! Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!

3 days sure doesn't work for tramadol.  It takes much, much longer.  That's one of the reasons we suggested a taper.  You felt really good on day 10.  Was it stopping the Lyrica that made you feel sick again?

I hope you feel better soon.

Hey guys! I jus wanted to check in. With you guys and let you guys know what's going on with me and baby. Well..... I'm 13 days tramadol freeeeee!!!!! And another thing..... I just wanted to take this time to say THANK YOU again! Seriously I'm not kidding when I say that. But I still feel really crapy! And I'm trying to find help to help me deal with all of this, but if you have the wrong kind of insurance (state funded) your crap out of luck!!!!!! And this is bay # five for me so I kinda know the difference between the w/d symptoms and being pregnant symptoms. The pregnancy symptoms have nothing on these w/d symptoms!  So I'm pretty much in hell all the time! It's funny, the say you be out the worst of it in a few day, a gather they are right, but they make it sound like you should be ok by then! No that's not true at all!!!!!! I still fell like I'm on day three! And I don't know about any other state or city, but Dallas Texas don't take tramadol seriously at all! Like your withdrawing from Tylenol!!!!!

I agree. Don 't take the Lyrica if you don't need to. Go down to 1 per day for a week then 1/2 then none. I have read that is horrible to withdraw from too. Withdrawal is withdrawal. You want to get it done. Not  prolong it more.

And you are doing great too!! I'm so happy for you. Remember - YOU ARE PREGNANT. And you will feel sick with morning sickness the first 3 months. Mine was so bad I was sick all the time. Even at 2 am. So maybe you are feeling pregnancy sick and not as bad w/d sick anymore. This baby is the best gift you can have & you seem to have a great husband too. But pregnancy is not always fun 9 mos of baby making you will do. Enjoy take care of baby and you and don't stress about w/d. You are thru the worst. Lose the Lyrica (wean) and take it as it comes.

Keep letting us know how you are doing and when that baby is born - gender name size!!

If the Lyrica isn't helping don't take it anymore sweetie...it's just not good for you or baby. Are you eating alright? Drinking? Taking folic acid?

Good news about the Tramadol!!  If the Lyrica isn't working on anything, get off it.  It breaks my heart reading how much trouble people have gietting off Lyrica.  I lucked out as it made me gain 16 pounds in two weeks.  I had worked too hard at the gym to let a drug cause such rapid weigjt gain.  It also made me feel really high and loopy.  I definitely dodged a bullet on that.

It's getting t the point it's hard to trust doctors when they're writing prescriptions, especially newe drugs.  I prefer drugs that have been around a long time and it's known how the drug works and what side effects there are.  Complaints of withdrawal symptoms from drugs like Lyrica, Tramadol, gabapentin and others have been around for many years but it seems like these drugs keep being prescribed without any warnings of dependence and withdrawal.  Until younexperience a bad outcome with a med, most people accept the prescription and ask few questions having complete trust in their doctor.  As tecnology advances and drug companies make newer meds, it's likely we'll see this keep happening.

Hello Pat, well you might be right  but I'm not even out the woods yet with the tramadol. I'm still having horrible w/ds! Once the bad dizzy and tiered feeling go away Ill be great! But I must admit, even while taking the Lyrica, its not really helping with the w/d symptoms! I don't know what to do.... But in good news... I'm 11 days off the tramadol!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Annie
Yes I am withdrawing AGAIN from percocets.  I am on Day 7.
I just am concerned about the Lyrica because it is another med that doctors prescribe and they have no idea how bad the withdrawal is.
If I was you I would ask to be tapered off of it ASAP.
I'm not trying to scare you but the longer you take it, the worse it will be.
I think you are fine if you stop it now.
There shouldn't be any problem.
Just my opinion.

I'm glad you were able to get off with no problems with your pregnancy.  It ticks me off that so many doctors are still prescribing tramadol and saying it's safe and non-addictive when it seems clear that theynare at least as bad, if not worse, than other pain meds.

Hello pat, well the ER doctor gave me 30 pills @2x daily with one refill. The Lyrica doesn't take the w/d symptoms all away for me, but it takes the edge off. I mean there is no "magic cure" at all  out there that is safe for my baby! I'm 11 days clean, and I feel bad still! But the w/d symptoms has eased a little. Are you going through w/s now? And if so from what, if you don't mind me asking. My only driving force is my BABY and only my BABY! If I hadn't became pregnant I would have not stopped!

I'm so glad to hear you and your baby are doing well Annie.
I think if you don't take Lyrica regularly it really helps with withdrawals.
I was prescribed it quite awhile ago and took it a few days and stopped.
While going through withdrawals I came across an article saying that Lyrica helped and thought I'd give it a try.
It helped me right away. It took away the sweats, everything.  I thought I had found a magic cure.
Now I am taking Lyrica for fibromyalgia and it sure doesn't help with withdrawals now.  My body is too used to it I guess.  That's a good thing for me.  No magic cures I mean..

How long do you stay on the lyrica for Annie?

Hello marycarmal! Thanks for your comment! And yes I'm afraid for our youth as well. And yes, I'm looking for a new ob/gyn and pcp! I agree, how can a doctor that put you on the med be so uncaring about you and your unborn child! He wanted to put me on the Lyrica when I first started seeing him but, I didn't have any insurance at the time, and tramadol was suppose to be the "safe" and the non addictive alternative to the opiates, back then. And the ob/ gyn that I seen..... Please don't get me started! But thanks for taking the time to talk to me!

Did you see an OB-GYN doctor at the ER or an Er doctor?  I'm guessing they gave you the Lyrica to keep you safe from seizures.  This drug also should not be stopped cold turkey.  I'm not sure about how much it helps overall wih withdrawals.  I kow some people have been given gabapentin for both pain and it was originally used as an anti-seizure med.  I've never heard of gabapentin being abused but our police department recently sent around a letter to all doctors and hospitals in the area talking about our town's terrible drug problem.  My doctor and I were talking about it and how kids today are inundated with a huge assoertment of things from pot (which they are seeing more and more kids being hospitalized due to it causing severqe gastritis and esophagitis.  My own son became extremely ill and was hospitalized because of it.)  They can get any pill or heroin within minutes.

Sorry, getting way off topic.  I just have very strong emotions about what our kids are exposed to and what little resources there are for them.

I think it's terrible that your prescribing doctor wouldn't help you.  Were you taking the Tramadol as it was prescribed or were you abusing it.  (I was prescribed Tramadol years ago for fibro but it made me feel really high and I asked to be taken off them after a few days.  Maybe they gave you Lyrica figuring it would eliminate the seizure risk and help with your fibro pain.

Maybe you should see if you can find an ob-gyn that specializes in higher than normal risk pregnancies, someone who is used to dealing with patients who have chronic pain and/or drug addiction or drug dependence.  You could ask your current ob-gyn for a referral  or check with the hospital you plan on delivering at or a teaching hospital.

I'm not sure I would want to remain a patient of a doctor who was so cavalier about my questions about my pregnancy.   Lots of women find themselves in the same position as you, whether they're on pain meds due to addiction or due to some type of chronic pain.  And with proper management of the pregnancy, it's possible to deliver a beautiful, healthy baby.

Hi there- Lyrica is sometimes prescribed for withdrawal symptoms although it's an "off label" use. People say it works better than expected so you should feel better soon!

Be sure to eat well, plenty of fluids, and rest. Good luck.
