Thanks everyone. Her family doctor thinks that anyone over 70 should be helped to exit as what he did to my Dad in 1999. My Mom won't change doctors. Tonight I told her that her doctor should be in jail for putting her on narcotics for 7 months when he knew by day 3 that they were not even working. Her doses of morphine have shocked every nurse we know. He also told her she could drink her vodka in the evening without a worry. I was out of the country when this was going on and my brother and sister begged her to get a 2nd opinion and she wouldn't.
She lives alone and on the fridge we've posted notes to drink 10 glasses of water a day and eat 2-3 apples a day and she still forgets to.
She used to be such a brilliant lady. I've never known anyone to recall 50 phone numbers, addresses and even the postal/zip codes of friends and family. Now she has no clue who saw her today or if she had an outing the day before.
Her doctor ought to be given months of narcotics to experience what she's going thru. I live in BC and will be putting in a complaint. Not expecting much to happen as he'll blame the one x-ray that showed nothing. Why didn't he order an MRI when my Mom couldn't walk? Oh, that's too expensive.
Luckily she didn't have to be on the 2 year waiting list as she was delivered to the hospital by ambulance.
Aloha,
Maggie
Hi, gosh, I cannot imagine a 78-year-old mom having to deal with this, I assume you have spoke to a physician and you have worked out a plan together? I am not sure if you are really aware of the symptoms that go along with withdrawal, have you ever experienced it? It is a living hell and that is putting it mildly. Good luck with what you are taking on. I am so sorry for you and your mother that you are having to deal with this.
Love, Cindy
I don't know of any natural remedies.. Phergan is good for the nausea.. but its a prescription.. as for chest tightness... its usually from elevated blood pressure.. keep an eye on her.. and if something doesn't seem right.. take her to the ER...
My grandfather was on lots of pain meds before and after his bypass surgery a few years ago.. when he stopped taking them his blood pressure got really really high and we had to take him to the ER..
I don't have any knowledge about what you're asking. However, my own mother is 78 and I cannot imagine her having to go through any kind of withdrawal...it would break my heart. God Bless you and your mom. You'll be in my prayers.
