Advice on confessions

Day 29! I told my husband and two best friends about my use and glad I did. My question is about my Mom. We don't talk that much and she is wrapped up in her own illnesses. She is also one of those people that has had multiple disappointments in life: divorce, death of a husband, cancer twice, abused child , etc.
Anyway, one time I filled a lortab refill of hers and kept it for myself. She doesn't know. This happened years ago. I understand why I did, but I don't know if I should tell her. She doesn't know I was addicted or detoxing now. I believe she would forgive me, but I also believe that she would carry the pain of my betrayal against her. I feel like telling her is just to unload my burden and give it to her to bear. Advice please.

I think telling your mom at this point would only make the both of you unhappy.  I hope you start feeling better~~sara

Thanks so much guys. I think guilt is my main motivation. This is my second day of tears and I hurt my knee so I can't do my daily walks and yoga. I'm feeling weak in my mental strength at the moment.

Oh, and by the way - VERY glad you shared with your husband and best friends though.  Now that I consider a POSITIVE step.  :)

I agree with IB - to tell your Mom only to make yourself feel better is in a way selfish.  I know it might make you feel good to unburden yourself, but really what would be the benefit to her?  This is one of those cases where I think you should just leave it alone.  Keep or establish a solid and loving relationship with hyour Mom based on who you are TODAY.  Leave the past where it belongs - in the past.  :)

I second that motion. Don't think Mom should have any more worries than she already has. Water under the bridge now. Just look ahead and not behind. I have that problem too. I have this tremendous amount of guilt just controlling my life and it's so hard to get rid of. Just dust off your feet and move on.

Getting honest and gratifying our own needs is often confused. Do you want to tell your mother to get rid of your guilt? If so, that is not honesty. It's actually selfish.

Think twice about your motives before taking huge steps like this. It can be very dangerous for your recovery and you could potentially hurt people in your life.

Good luck.
