After Care and Giving Back

You always hear that part of recovery is giving back.   Taking the time to encourage a stranger going through something you did once, knowing how important it is for them to have an outlet and support as you needed.  I hope more who have been there or loved someone who has gone through addiction will contribute.  It was part of my recovery.  Do you think it is important to give back or connect in your process and life living in recovery?

It is very important to give back and at the same time take care of yourself.  I have seen many times when people spend so much time helping others they forget about themselves.  I learn something new about myself everyday on my recovery journey.

I still attend 3/4 meetings a week and have been 6 years clean of everything (alcohol included).  I speak once a month at a womans detox unit in my area and have numerous women I work with to help them with their journey.  It was told to me very early on that the best way to get out of yourself is to help others....and I believe it.  Where I live, we in recovery are like a family and we help each other.  I hope to be doing this for the rest of my life.

So many people are under the assumption that once you put down the drugs everything will be good.  I was one of those people.  I learned real early on that getting off the drugs was the easy part.  I would be lost without my recovery family~
