Is there any way for you to go see an addiction dr?
Xanax is a short acting benzo, all the tapering plans switch to valium and go from there. Xanax has to be tapered real slow, about 20% of you actual dosage a week. so if you take 41/2 a ay, go down to 4 for a week, see how you feel and then go down again. I have been tapering off oxazepam which is a short acting benzo as well, My golden rule was 2 decent nights before tapering off, not 3, 2!!! That's another rule, you have to be honest to yourself and not stall, go down 20% as soon as your body got used to the dosage.
Best of luck to you. xoxoxo. sophie.
PS: Here's a site where you have tons of info

like mr lucky said...the cough syrup can be quit ct...codeine is a narcotic/a weak one tho//phenegan(promethiazine) is not habit forming and would be the safer of the 3 meds u named..xanax would have to tapered...u said u were takin 4.5 mgs? and that dose more than once a day? xanax comes in 0.25, 0.5, 1 and i beleive a 2 mg form...but even a 1mg dose is a dose to taper from..xanax is the strongest of the benzos..a dr to help u with the taper would be great..can u ask ur dr for help???
The cough medicine I am very familiar with and the amounts you are taking won't be much if any problem to stop cold. The xanax as you have hear here, is quit a different story and needs to be tapered slowly and with medical supervision if possible. all the best
The xanax really needs to be tapered down before you quit if your taking 4 1/2mgs per day, otherwise you run the risk of having a seizure. Its never recommended that anyone suddenly stop using a benzo that they've been for awhile. Im not too familiar with the promethazine or even the cough syrup, but you could also taper that down so that when it comes time to quit your withdrawal symptoms should be a little bit easier. Your best bet to get off the xanax is talking with your doctor about your plan, or come up with one with your doctor. Whoever the prescribing doctor is should know your history and have a good idea about how slow or fast you should taper down. The hardest part for me in the past detoxing from xanax besides the awful, creepy feeling, was not being able to sleep at all for a few days. I ended up getting a short term prescription for a sleeping aid, then I started taking 5mgs of melatonin. Most important part of this is get a handle on this xanax problem, the longer you wait is only gonna make it harder, but a good slow taper can minimize some of the w/d symptoms. I wish you all the best, you can do this, take care.
Best of luck to you!I have quit ct on them and thats when I was in jail 4 a month.I feel like maybe thats where i need to go back to to get off them.In jail you have no choice..But the withdrwals are terrible....Please if you have any other advice let me know? Ty xoxoxo pineapple
Thank you for the response!I totally forgot the say How much i was taking...I would say I was taking aleast 4 in a half ml grams at night with about 4 tsp of the cough syrup everynight with it. Ive been taking them 4 on and off for 10 yrs .Right now i am trying again to quit with the help of my husband who I really feel like I failed to besides with my 2 sons...Its sooooooooo hard to quit clod turkey ,the widrawls are so severe that you just want to feel normal.I have someone who also works in Dr.office who for awhile I dealt with !I would pay her a certain amount and she would call in my perscriptions..What do i do ?I am on my second day of quitting but I couldnt do it could turky so I am cutting back to see if that will help me the severity of the withdrwals.I feel so blessed to have a husband who has stuck with me all the way.
Any other advice?

Hi and welcome to the forum!
I can't talk for the syrup not my DOC but if you took Xanax more than 3 weeks in a row you have to taper it off, you cannot go CT on them.
I don't know what dosage you were on and for how long but the risk of seizure and/or delirium tremens are so high that IMO, you should go to your dr and talk about your addiction. Decide of a taper plan and stick to it no matter what. Tapering is not easy but it's sure worth the ride. I've been tapering from benzo myself, I can tell.
Best of luck to you. xoxoxo. sophie.
What kind of advice are you looking for?.......first, you admitted you have an addiction, which usually means its time to quit. I too have always had sleeping problems. My sister got me on Nyquil at about 19 yrs. old. I am now 47 this October and have never had a night that I didn't take tylenol PM or Melatonin, or something OTC......it's sad, but I don't believe I will ever be able to fall asleep like a normal person EVER ! it suks...
If you are on xanax, how much are you taking per. night? for how long have you been taking it?.......the codeine syrup, how long have you been abusing it? do you get withdrawals or do you just always have a bottle on hand......I never could figure how people get addicted to codeine cough syrup, as how long can a doc prescribe it ....anyhow....
I am very sorry to hear about your mom's 22 yr. addiction. It doesn't have to be you, you know that, right? Sorry for all the questions, but don't know how to offer advice If I don't know how long and how much you are using.
Welcome to the forum.
