At home remedies to ease w/d

Hello, I am currently taking 75mg Nucynta for chronic back pain and my pcp gives me 90 a month.  I took a little more than I should have and wound up running out about 10 days too soon. I can get a refill in 10 days, but I am going through some pretty bad w/d. I feel like I am dying, I have no energy, I have NO appetite, and I am having flu-like symptoms (to put it nicely). Is there anything I can do to help ease the w/d pain? Any home remedy that helps? I will be giving my next fill of nucynta to my husband for him to give to me daily so this never happens again. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

My RLS is soo few and far between that I don't think I need to add a new med to my list. I have no medical insurance, so prescriptions can cost an arm and a leg. Nucynta is over $200 for 90, but the lady at the pharmacy gave me a saver card from Nucynta and it has saved me a lot of money so far.

Today was not too bad. I seemed to sleep a little better last night, my legs did not act up as bad. The first few days of no Nucynta were the worst. The mental anguish was hell. But, tomorrow is Monday and that means just 7 more days until I can get my meds refilled. Monday-Friday seem to go by pretty quick, what with getting my girls off to school and I go to school, then I have to get my girls to dance a couple days a week. So I think I'll be better from here on out. I just really really really gotta take the meds like they are prescribed. I don't want to ever go through this again.

The only thing I noticed about today was I was so extremely exhausted. It was like all of my energy was completely drained. Every time I stood to go do some laundry or make dinner, I got sooo light headed and just felt so drained. I had my b12 refilled (i'm supposed to be giving myself 1cc of b12 via shot in the arm once a month and I haven't done it in a long time) so I'm hoping that helps. More tomorrow. Thanks for listening.

I had RLS before withdrawals and man it killed me when I was withdrawing.  I had a scrpit (non addictive) that I had run out of and my dr. was out of town.  It is carbidopa (generic )  and it works great with very few side effects (I had had one) as you take so little.

LOL, That "ants got your candy" idea is not a bad one! I would not call you a bad mom, you're saving your kids from future cavities and belly aches! :o)

I do have RLS, but I've never taken any meds specifically for RLS. I used to take ambien 10 mg. I took that for 10 years. I started out taking 1 10mg tab every night. After a few years, that went up to 2 10mg tabs a night. After a few more years, he tried Ambien CR 12.5 on me and I didn't like the results, so we went back to 2 10mg Ambien at night. Well, when my dad passed away, my whole world just turned dark and ugly and I just wanted to sleep to not even think about it. My dad and I were best buds, I just couldn't handle the fact that he was gone. So I took 60 10mg Ambien and 30 Ambien CR 12.5 mg in 24 hrs. I HAVE TO SAY THIS, I was NOT trying to kill myself, I just wanted to sleep and every time I took my regular dose of ambien to sleep, I would wake up about 30mins later thinking I hadn't taken my medicine and I'd take more. I was in such a stupor, it didn't occur to me that my medicine bottle was emptying! It wasn't too much longer after that episode and I went into rehab. My doctor told me that I survived because my body had built up such a tolerance to Ambien, that I could've taken 500 and it would not have killed me. I was like, "well that's good, because I wasn't trying to go there. I just wanted to sleep and forget."

He doesn't allow me to have Ambien in any way shape or form anymore, and I'm kinda glad. Now, instead of Ambien, I take 1 10mg flexeril at night to help my back and help me sleep. He also prescribes 20 5mg valium a month for anxiety attacks. (Like when I'm having to grab the kids up in the middle of the night to rush them to the tornado shelter because one is heading straight for our location! Talk about a heart attack! Running out in the rain and lightning! Crazy!)

Man, I have said a lot. I certainly didn't mean to ramble on. But you guys are super easy to talk to, and my husband really does not understand addiction. He just can't wrap his head around it. So there's no talking to him. Thanks you guys. You're the best.

One more thing, last night I took my 10 mg flexeril with 1 5mg valium (dr said that was ok to do) and I still had some crazy RLS. I'm about to head to bed, I'm hoping that tonight goes better and i'm not trying to run a marathon in my sleep. Goodnight you guys.

P.S. Late Night with Jimmy Fallon is a MUST for w/d blues. Makes me laugh every time, no matter how crummy i'm feeling. :o)

can your husband help with the kids?

Do you have restless leg syndrome?  Is it really bad?  There are some over the counter remedies for this.  Hyland's Restless Legs

Not sleeping is tough.  Why don't you try something over the counter like Melatonin or Alteril?

Walking seemed to help my legs.  Also, try soaking in a hot bath with epsom salts.  Quick way to get magnesium in your body.

I told the kids that ants got in their candy..took what I liked and dumped the rest.  I know "bad momma"! :)

I haven't taken anything so far. I've been staying away from foods and drinks that would add jitters (i.e. caffeine, chocolate) and also smoking. I am a social smoker (although, I noticed that i smoked more when I took the nucynta), but I haven't had but maybe one a day because I figure that not smoking at all might add a different w/d and make things worse. My kids are driving me up the wall and I try to close my eyes and count to 10 and remind myself that none of this is there fault and they are probably just reacting to my mood that is noticeably different. I think tomorrow, I will not let them eat so much of their halloween candy, it has only made them bounce off the walls all day.

Last night was an experience. My legs hurt ALL NIGHT and I literally could not keep still. I had little sleep and that too is contributing to my mood. But so far, I have taken tylenol and advil for pain, but nothing else. I really appreciate you guys, it really does help talking to people who know what I'm going through and can relate.  :o)

Being moody is normal.  I just told my son - mommy is really sick and isn't feeling well.   Glad to hear that you are feeling ok.  Are you taking anything over the counter to help with withdrawals?

Well, I'm hoping that with my husband's help, I can take them as directed this time. They really do help my back pain. So far today, I've been doing ok. I've tried to eat (even though I'm not hungry) and that seems to help. I try to stay busy around the house to pass the time. I find that I'm snapping at the kids worse than ever. I hate that. :o(

This is from Nucynta's own website:

NUCYNTA® ER contains tapentadol, a mu-opioid agonist and a Schedule II controlled substance with an abuse liability similar to other opioid analgesics.

NUCYNTA® ER can be abused in a manner similar to other opioid agonists, legal or illicit. These risks should be considered when prescribing or dispensing NUCYNTA® ER in situations where the physician or pharmacist is concerned about an increased risk of misuse, abuse, or diversion. Schedule II opioid substances, which include hydromorphone, morphine, oxycodone, fentanyl, oxymorphone, and methadone, have the highest potential for abuse and risk of fatal overdose due to respiratory depression.

Yes, getting out really helped. Not only does it make the time go by faster, but I felt more energized. Sitting at home left me feeling depressed and lonely.

I really feel like my doctor must be mistaken with this Nucynta, but he is so smart! He is on the board at our local hospital. Is the Nucynta a narcotic? Or just "like" a narcotic? I don't understand where the med lies. I was so happy to finally be put on a medication that really helped and was NOT a narcotic (from what I was being told) and I felt like a normal human being taking my medicine like I should. Maybe he was trying to psych me out?? Like, "i'll tell her it's not a narcotic, then maybe she won't want to abuse it..." Because he knows i'm truly in pain and nothing helps. I just don't know.

Maybe you can go back to the Dr. and talk to him about another pain option.  You might even google the med and print off the info for him.  LOL

It is good to keep busy it helped me to get out some each day.  Keep posting when you need to.

Hey guys, thanks for the info so far. I didn't know that Nucynta was comparable to morphine! My doctor made it seem like it was non narcotic and it was like Ultram or Ultracet, but better. I have a history of addiction, and my doctor would NEVER let me have so many pills if they were narcotic. He once told me that he would not give me any hydro's or perc's unless I had a broken bone. I went to rehab for a little over a month for an addiction to both of those and ambien. I have been doing so well. Now this. That's why I told my husband that next time I get a refill of this Nucynta, he would be in charge of them. If left to me, I will take one every 4 hrs. I have no self control, but if someone else is in charge, it's better. I'm supposed to be able to take 1 three times daily. It's for my back. I have scoliosis and chronic tailbone pain. My youngest broke my tailbone when I she came into this world (to put it nicely). :o)

Today was hard at first, but then I forced myself to get out of the house and I went to visit my dad's grave site for veteran's day. He fought in Vietnam in the U.S. Navy. I miss him dearly. Then I went to pick my girls up from school and have tried to remain busy. I just keep telling myself, "you're ok. You're not dying. Everything will be ok." Thanks for helping me out with this. I really appreciate it. :o)

Nucynta (tapentadol) belongs to a group of drugs called narcotic pain relievers. It is similar to morphine.

Hope this helps!

I kept telling myself...YOU HAVE the FLU!  It will be over and I will feel so much better.  My brain seemed to get that and settled down a little.  It is hard, but doable!  The Thomas Recipe (bottom of the page under Health Pages will help.  I did not to the tranquilizers and had to cut back on the Ltryosine, but the rest really helped.  Imodium, Imodium, Imodium (liquid or pills if the liquid can't be found or you can't swallow it) will help.  I took double the dosage for a few days (personal choice) and it helped so much..even with the withdrawals in general and the opiate trots which sucked.

Hydrate and eat!  Even if it is just a little every hour or so.  You have to eat something to keep your energy up as much as possible.

If you have Restless legs..it is hit or miss what works.  Walking seemed to help me some.  Hot bath with epsom salts..a little.  I finally had to get my doctor to refill my restless legs meds (non addictive) to get some sleep.  If nothing works, your doctor might help.

One hour at a time is all anyone can ask.  After 2 weeks it gets a little better and I started to say, One day at a time!  Your brain will do all sorts of things to get you to take a pill.  I found if I was hungry..the cravings got worse.  I would try to eat a banana, a few grapes or a few crackers to get that under control.

Good for you.  I hope all goes well.  You have made a good start coming here....this site has helped me so much!!!  Keep posting!!!!!

Try the Thomas recipe (bottom right hand corner of this page under Most Viewed Health Pages).  There are some OTC items that you can buy at a pharmacy and/or health store that can help you.  Also do you think your dr would prescribe Clonidine for you?  It is a blood pressure med that is well known for it's effectiveness in easing opiate withdrawals.  Good luck.  Let us know how it goes.
