Babies born addicted to Pills

My friend is about to take custody of a child that was born addicted to an assortment of pills. I have searched the internet looking for what to expect and if the child will survive, but i have not been able to find anything that has sufficient information. He was born premature and my friend is worried, can someone please help answer my question i would be so grateful.

thank you very much. i appreciate everything and hopefully something good for somebody else will come out of this terrible situation. like you said maybe another expecting mother will see this and maybe realize that there is something so much more important than using, like the life of an infant.

Oh My!!! I am so sorry for your loss and for your friends loss! It is such a shame that some people don't get help or don't follow through with their treatment while pregnant! I hope this thread finds somebody who is using while pregnant and maybe just maybe they will see what effects of not treating their disease of addiction has on their baby! I will say a prayer for you and your friend. God Bless~

Jess,

Like avig said, can you find out what drugs the baby was subjected to? I have a nurse that works in my office and I can ask her the risks for the baby but she will ask me what all the baby was subjected to, babys weight and if the baby is on a respiratory ventilor or if it is breathing on its own?

If you can get more info we can do some research for you.

hi, no the mother has no right to the baby, my friend was awarded custody but she has never been in a situation like this before and therefore has no clue what to expect such as mental disorders and things of that nature that could be caused from the drug use. Thank you for your prayers, they are greatly appreciated,
i will keep the baby's health posted as he progresses

Jess,

OMG that poor baby going thru withdrawl but the baby is in the best possible place (hospital) and they will help the baby get thru everything.

I do not know anything about babies being born addicted to drugs, i am hoping that the mother does not have any rights to this baby?? being that the baby was born addicted to drugs.

Keep us updated, I will pray for the baby and your friend in church tomorrow. Jules

the mother was about 28 weeks when she delivered. her doctor perscribed her methadone to help her quit but she abused them and also continued to abuse other pain medication. i'm not sure what all she took i just know that it was an assortment of pain meds. My friend that is fighting for custody told me that the baby was finally breathing on his own without help but he's having pretty bad withdrawal symptoms. they started him on medication today to help with the withdrawals.
