tapering down to nothing then quitting is an option...or ct and take a week or so off work is an option as well....some use suboxone so they can work and stop the drugs but it is habiforming so can only be used for a short time...there is also inpatient detox...can not work and do that of course..and there are no guarantees...meetings and aftercare will help more than anything..there is also alot of info in the health pages..best of luck and keep posting
Gyver,
Your freind had a couple of options. First, there are hospitals that have rehab programs where he could go to the emergency room and they will admit him into detox. Do him a favor and check his insurance, these rahab programs can be extremely expensive. If your freind has a good relationship with his family physician, he can go and tell the doctor what is happening and start a tapering program. The physician will prescribe the opiate in a smaller dose for a temporary period and then lower the dosage until he can get off the drug. That way he can function but it does take self control. If he doesn't have that control he'll need someone to hold the pills and administer them at the prescribed dosage. The most important thing is he needs to really want to come off these opiates, if he doesn't have the drive it'll be incredibly hard. It's hard enough getting clean when you really want it. Good luck and let us know how he's doing.
