Can it be the 5htp?

I recently started taking 5htp.  I wanted to get off benzos (which I had been taking at a very low dose for two years.  I had all but tapered when I started the 5htp.  So after a week, I added GABA, Glutamine and Selenium.  I started waking with very high blood pressure (when it is usually 120 over 80 or lower) and nausea, dizziness, lethargy and a feeling of pressure in my head as well as headaches.  The GABA pill I take is a lozenge with a combo of GABA, Glycine, Tyrosine and Taurine.  I stopped all the supplements for three days, then went back to one 50 mg capsule of 5htp.  My blood pressure shot back up and all the other symptoms returned.  I may have taken too many of the 5htp that first week, but I felt great and was starting to sleep really well.  Not I am not sure what it going on. Any ideas?

It certainly could be the 5htp but a very basic rule of science is that correlation does not imply causation. Just because your blood pressure problems seem to be correlating with the times you've taken the 5htp, they could be caused by something else entirely or the combination of 5htp with something else as I think Sarah is suggesting. I have taken 5htp without noticing blood pressure changes but I am not a doctor. I would suggest that you stop taking it and if the blood pressure problems continue you may want to try stopping something else. Also I've read that benzo withdrawal is funny- it can come in waves. It's not constant like opiate withdrawal, though unfortunately from what I understand, it can last much longer. Good luck and of course it goes without saying, if you keep having these episodes see a doctor so that he can help with the proper diagnosis and treatment. God Bless.
