DayQuil and drug tests

New here but need to see if anyone has experience or educatex opinions on this. My foster child is in juvenile drug court for a marijuana problem. He had done well for almost 50 days, and suddenly failed a drug test for amphetamines last week. He is tested 4 times a week...he was "dirty" Monday, but clean Tuesday. He came down with a cold ladt weekend and I gave him Dayquil Sunday night and Monday, and he swears he hasn't taken anything else; he's never taken amphetamines in the past so I doubt he would now, but I can't be 100% sure. The sample was sent for additional testing, which will be back Tuesday. I've read a few accounts os DayQuil effecting drug tests online, but wondered if anyone here has any knowledge of this.

Thanks, and I wish each of you a great day!

Yes it will show a false positive it did on me when i tested for a job and I don't take drugs but did take dayquil because I was sick. When the test was sent off it came back negative. I'm glad you had faith in your foster child because some of these folks in these comments would've just went ahead and convicted him. I'm here to tell you Dayquil will most def show a falso positive.

I just took a urine drug test a day after taking DayQuil.
I tested negative acrossed the board.
Not one false positive.
Drank a little more than half a bottle to get me thru my 14 hour work day.

Just an update...they sent my son's urine sample for additional testing and it was, indeed, an ingrediant in the Dayquil that caused him to test positive for amphetamines. If you are using even OTC meds please mention it before taking a drug test. We were told by the probation officer that Dayquil couldn't be the cause, but clearly it was.

Thanks for your help!!

Thanks for this information.  I think it's good for everyone to know.  There are false positives and negatives and some doctors are not willing to retest.  Knowing these meds can cause a false reading is good to know and I'm going to keep a copy of it in case I ever run into a problem.

Medications & Substances Causing False Positives

According to a report by the Los Angeles Times New Service, a study of 161 prescription and over the counter medications showed that 65 of them produced false positive results in the most widely administered urine test. Ronald Siegel, a psychopharmacologist at UCLA said 'The widespread testing and reliance on tell-tale traces of drugs in the urine is simply a panic reaction invoked because the normal techniques for controlling drug use haven't worked very well. The next epidemic will be testing abuse."

Byrd Labs has in its possession an internal document from the Syva Company, makers of the widely used EMIT test. This document, leaked by a disillusioned company employee, lists more than 250 over-the-counter medications and prescription drugs that can cause false positives.
