Cymbalta for depression

I've been clean off the oxys for 11 days now and today I went to the doctor for a follow up appointment (I got really sick from a flu shot while I was in detox last week) Anyway, I told the Dr. I was severly depressed and he wrote me a script for Cymbalta. I've been on anti-depressants before, even way before I got addicted to oxycontin. I've never taken Cymbalta though. I kind of feel like I'm substituting one drug for another and they say you can't do that in NA but I have been soooooo depressed. Was it premature of me to ask the Dr. for an anti-depressant so early in my recovery?? Should I have just been more patient and allowed myself to get better on my own without using another drug? The Dr. knows nothing about my addiction. Anyone else start using anti-depressants early in their recovery and did they help?

If you choose the anti-depressant route. Just remember that if you don't get the desired resultsin a week or two...Tell Your DR. I went through several before one worked. I prefer Zoloft, but everyone's built differently. Have you looked into the amino-acids and SamE or Rhodiola? These are just as powerful for most people without the side affects. Like sweats, memory loss, lack of sex drive, etc...If I were you I'd try these first. I would love to be off the Zoloft. It is just too soon after being clean. The body is still trying to regulate itself.

also remember most docs try to start you out on like high does of anti depressants don't do that try a low dose first. I was on 10mg of lexapro for along time I went down to 5mg and it is the ****!

i have to also say that lexapro saved my butt with the depression...Give it a try..

I to saw my doc today he wants me on 9 months of a drug called efforex xr. Its a strick nine months only. To help combat the loss of ceratonin n dopemiehn that was destroyed from oxy. I to have lots of questions. I left office without script for my refill on xanax n said no for now for the antidepressant. He assured me it is a great waybto recovery. And will be there to fill it if I change my mind. Look into it. I may b spelling it wrong. Can't read the note he wrote down so I could study it

No you're not subbing one drug for another. there not the same @ all, it's highly unlikely that you will abuse cymbalta. "Depression hurts, but you don't have to." Good luck

I personally feel that anti-depressants have been crucial to my recovery.  I had taken anti-depressants before not that I could really tell if they helped because I was taking vicodin everyday for the last 5 years.  I am 29 days clean and REALLY struggled with the depression and still am a bit, however I truly feel like the meds my dr put me on right away have helped.  Is cymbalta the right drug for you?  Time will tell but no I don't think you were too quick in asking your doc for an anti-depressant.  And really you're not subbing one drug for another in my opinion...it's not like you're substituting alcohol for oxys.  Congrats on 11 days clean...that's great!!!!!!!!!!!
