Addicted to Mersyndol/Dolased

For about two years now I've been taking 20 occasionally 40 Mersyndol or Dolased caplets each day. Probably have a couple of days off a week. I've been so ashamed that I've felt dependent on this OTC medicine. Really ashamed that I would go to about 30 different chemists around Sydney so I could do the rounds. Such a bonus if they sold in boxes of 40, didn't help that I was able to buy online and just claim I was too busy to get to a chemist and I only used for my back ache.

I'm 27 years old, I've got a gorgeous husband and beautiful child, we would like to add to our family. Worst thing was being told by a pharmacist that I could take it whilst pregnant as the only one who'd be harmed was me and my life, baby would just be sleep so I have no fears in taking while I am pregnant but I don't want to anymore!!! We have a lovely house and a "happy" life. Why am I doing this? He has found empty pill packets and I swear is onto me but I just make up excuses and he lets it go. I cannot sleep without taking at least 10-20 in a sitting. It used to be difficult for me to swallow pills, I am not so used to it I can do 5 in one go.

What should I do? Should I go see my GP and tell them or should I try cold turkey? I've done at the most 4 days of nothing when I've not been able to get to a chemist. First night I don't sleep, second night I sleep because I'm exhausted, third night I'm back on track then if I can't get to a chemist I am usually too excited to sleep knowing that I'm going to a chemist the next day. It's like Christmas... So pathetic.

I have been taking mersondol for now 2 years, it's gotten worse the last 6 months with up to 8 a day. I can't sleep without at least taking 4 at.a.time..what do I do so upset.and frustrated. I am down to one box after the over.counter stoppage.

I'm in the same situation I'm 23 and the can't stop taking the dolaseds cause I'm a addicted to the and if I don't take them I'm up all night ATM I've been up 4 day straight but I can't stop taking the cause the put me to sleep if I don't take them I can't sleep

Good to see another Aussie. One thing, Mersyndol also has 500mg of paracetamol in it which you are not meant to have more than 4000mg a day (max 8pills a day) and by what you have said you are double and triple that. You need to stop ASAP otherwise you will be killing your liver.

I think you should go to your doctor and explain to him how many your taking about that you want off it all and how he can help you.

I've been addicted to Nurofen plus taking 30-40 a day at sometimes, a replaced a few weeks ago and now doing a taper and getting clean again. I was doing the same thing you did doing to many different chemists etc

Talk to your doctor and your husband.  Our secrets keep us sick.  As for what the chemist said about the meds only messing you up is not true.  The babies feel what we do and there can be birth defects both physically and mentally.  I am glad you found us so keep talking~
