fentanyl is about 100 times stronger than morphine- (gram for gram), and a lot of people have a harder time getting off that, and oral morphine as well. Your transition was bad probably because it takes time for the fentanyal to release into your body fats under the skin, and from 48 to 72 hours from body fats to the blood stream. And remember that fentanyl patches are in micro-grams per hour, and release slowly, and morphine salts don't metabolize very well for a lot of people. The Ocycodone you were taking, is a fast acting drug, and has a short half life of 3-4.5 hours, and is completely out of your system in 6-9 hours. You were in full wd's days before before the fentanyl even began to start working.
Your total dose may also be less than what you were taking of oxycodone as well.
Like all opiates however, just wait a while. You'll develop a physical dependence, and withdrawal symptoms when you stop using/taking them. How severe they will be will depend on your dosage, and how much tolerance you have to that particular opiate formulation. Many people have just as bad wd's from fentanol as anything else, they just creep up slower because of the long time it takes fentanyl to be used up and out of your body.
Oxy certainly isn't for everyone, and shouldn't be prescribed at all for temporary pains. But for people who suffer from chronic long term/life long pain, it can be a miracle drug.
You've only been on it for a short time and not too high a dose, so you should be fine in a couple weeks. Eat foods high in potassium like banana's, take a good multi vitamin plus extra vitamin c. That helps. Hot baths with salts before bed will help settle any RLS you have and let you get to sleep.
Forty mg. of Ambien is a big dose. Is that's what prescribed for you, or are you just taking it? Please be careful with that. Melatonin can be used for sleep and it's all-natural. Also, Alteril is wonderful. It's also all-natural and has several things in it, including melatonin and Valerian Root and Passion Flower and some others. I like it much better than Ambien. It takes time for sleep to be restored after detoxing off narcotics. In the meantime, try what I mentioned. Also a warm bath before bed and making your room very pleasant and quiet will help a bit. And some exercise during the day (but not before bed) should bring about better sleep. Time is the greatest healer of all, but until then, try the other things.
