I have heard of opiate addicts being able to taper and avoid withdrawals, or at least severe ones. But in any case, acute WDs are like a bad flu, the onset and duration depends on the length/severity of addiction. But generally the worst acute WDs last 7-10 days for a very short taper or cold-turkey quit. Refer your daughter to the Thomas Recipe and Amino Acid Protocol on the health pages here, those are reported by many to help in alleviating acute WD symptoms.
I had a mild off and on addiction to Vicodins. By mild I mean 6 each per day of the 750 miligrams. Many heavy users take anywhere from 20 to 30 per day and I've heard it said while in detox that 60 to 100 pills per day is not unusual. I was told to see a physician and talk to him/her about Suboxone. She put me on it. This medication is very hard on the body and you WILL have withdraw from that as well. I tried taking myself off Subuxone after a year and had to be hospitalized. If you daughter has only been taking them for six months (depending on the miligrams and the amount) I would highly suggest someone help her taper off. Please do not give your young daughter either one of the medications mentioned Methedone or Suboxone. I've been in detox 4 times in 12 years and the best way has always been to tapper down. Even if it takes another 4-6 months for her. She won't be subjected to possibly becoming addicted to the other medications.
Thank you for your advice. I will go to the site you suggested . This is so new to me I am very worried about our daughter. Thank you so much agian for your advice. Mamak53
You should start by taking your daughter to a doctor she knows and trusts because this will be very hard for her. If she needs something like Suboxone or other treatment her trusted doctor can refer her on. She is so very fortunate to have realized her problem and had parents she could come to for help. You should be very proud that she felt like she could come to you. I'd like to think my daughters feel that way about me. Best of luck!
I am happy to tell you your daughter does not need methadone at this point. Methadone maintenance is something I would not recommend to my closest friend. It is a drug that has many side effects. And coming off of it can be a hellish experience that takes months to recover from, some of the symptoms are cravings for the drug of choice and insomnia that can last for months. Please stay away from Methadone. I am sure her two broken toes are healed by this point so there is no reason to refer her to pain management. If she claims she is still in pain after 6 months I would find that hard to believe, What has happened here is she has developed an opiate addiction which is a treatable chronic disease of the brain. I would recommend a drug called suboxone which she will be seen in an M.D. office setting rather than going to a methadone clinic where she will be exposed to all sorts of addicts, Heroin, Oxycontin. Many of the clients deal drugs at these clinics. I know it is absurd. I do not think the idea of her being trusted to dose herself by your PCP with the drug of her choice, hydrocodone she is addicted to the euphoria that this drug caused in some people when taken in larger than normal doses. My suggestion is she do a 21 day detox with Suboxone. To get more info on this program go to www.Suboxone.com I do not know what part of the country you live in but this web site has a physician finder based on zip code. Not all M.D. are allowed to prescribe this medication as it requires a special waiver and 20 hours of class room training. Good Luck to you all and God Bless-------------NOAH
