I have a question about taking percocet's & vicodin's. How many is to many to take at one time?
My bf has a tooth that needs to be pulled. His insurance is waiting for prior approval before he can get it pulled!The dentist is giving him percocet's. They are the (5mg/325) The vicodin's are (5mg/500)I believe i have the dosages correct.
He takes 3 percocet's & 1 vicodin in the morning!
Then later on at night around 7pm he takes 3 more percocet's & also 1 more vicodin to.
He don't drink no alcohol.
He smokes pot but i don't think mixing that with the pills will cause any problems. I know mixing alcohol with pills that's a deadly combination!!
Ok with this being said is he taking to many pills in one day? I honestly think he is. Plus i think he is abusing them. I sat him down today & told him taking this many pills can cause liver problems. It can interrupt breathing to if he would take to many pills at one time. He wont listen. He claims he is not hooked on the pills. He said his tooth hurts really bad. I mean i get his tooth hurts but gee-sh does he really need to take 6 percocet's + 2 vicodin's per day?

well the dentist gives him 2 scripts a week. Each script is 16 pills a piece! So ya he runs out before the script runs out. I am also getting a tooth pulled. I take advil only. Mabye 1000 mg a day. The insurance he has is ****. Its been almost a month that the dentist sent info off to his insurance. So he has been waiting for a month. The viocdins i think his mom takes for her back pain & its possible thats how he is getting them. I told him yesterday not to mix perks & vics together. Sense my friend told him not to take so much i looke up online & asked questions here & on other forums as well. This has been a big help. I am getting as much info as i can & then im going to confront him again to see if he listens this time.
OK, first of all...toothaches are about the worst pain EVER!!!! I'd rather birth 10 more children (at once...lol) than EVER suffer with another chopper issue!
HOWEVER.....how long has he waited for his insurance to approve a simple 5 min tooth extraction? That he seems to have been waiting weeks is outrageous!!!! Not only does it need done to get rid of the pain...but also, he is at risk for a serious infection by leaving it in there.
If I were you...I would call the dentist office and inquire why there is such a lag in the insurance approval!!! They may actually be able to get the ball rolling if you complain. PLUS...if you get the extraction to happen....the dentist will no longer need to Rx him the pain pills...maybe for a few days after the extraction, but that should be it. Also, why is he getting the Vicodin Rx'ed from his PCP?
Yes, he is taking too much and may be headed down a bad road...if you can move along the dental procedure you MAY be able to nip this in the bud...but cutting off his supply, and by taking away his need (pain wise). I would still keep a close close eye on him, however, as it truly does sound like he is chasing a high more than taking them for pain.
The reason I say this is...if his tooth hurts THAT bad, where he requires basically a handful of narcotics per DOSE...then he would be needing them again before his nighttime dose. Regardless of how many he takes in a sitting...they are still going to wear off...and if there is 10-12 hours in between doses...my guess is he is taking it more for the buzz than for the pain control. Toothaches are the worst.....but there is simply NO excuse that he has had to wait more than a day or two to have this procedure approved!!!!
Is he on antibiotics as well? They usually help with the pain after a few days. Most times, a toothache is caused by an infection resulting from a bad tooth, and antibiotics certainly help with the pain if that is the case.
I'm assuming he is using more than one Pharmacy as well? And is he getting the pills through his insurance? Usually, insurance won't cover the meds if they are being filled before the refill, or next script is due (if he is taking more than Rx'ed). Those are some other telltale signs that he knows what he is doing, and that it very likely could be more abuse related than for genuine pain relief.

You mentioned that your boyfriend is being prescribed the Percocets by his dentist. Who is prescribing him the Vicodin that he takes in the evening, and why?
The max. dose for the acetaminophen in those pills would be between 3 and 4 grams a day. If he WAS a chronic drinker, then it would be lower, at less than or equal to 2 grams a day. He is taking 2600 mg, which is 2.6 grams daily. If he is taking more than you know, or that he admits (and this is possible), then he risks liver, kidney, and heart problems. Usually, when someone has a problem with drugs or alcohol, they never let anyone know the REAL amount they use. If he's doing this, you can see the problem with the acetaminophen alone.
If you are thinking that he is addicted, it's certainly a possibility, and even is if it HADN'T crossed your mind. I'm glad he's not drinking with the medications as well, but I'm thinking like you are, that SOMETHING is up here. It's odd that a dentist would prescribe him the Percocet while his primary care doctor is prescribing him Vicodin. He's hiding something, and he's not only hiding it from you, but from his doctor(s) as well. At least I think so anyway.

Sounds like your bf has a problem with these pills. It is too many to take a day. Most of us claimed we werent addicted to them too. What does the dentist say or doesnt he know how many he is taking a day? Is this the first time he has taken pills that you know of?
Yes it's too many.I'm assuming since you say he smokes pot and didn't say he does anything else,that taking that many pills at once doesn't make him sick.WHY is the doctor prescribing him perks and vikes at the same time?And he's giving him 32 a week of each? That makes no sense to me at all,for a tooth that needs pulled????!!!!!!!!!!
ya he smokes pot daily. He only gets 16 pills per script. So he has to get them 2 times per week. Well my bf says he is in pain. But to take that many i honestly dont understand that. Ya he runs out quite quick actually. Do u think thats to many pills to take in one day?I mean i think it is.
