I need help with detoxing

I just need some support.  I am once again trying to detox myself from norcos. I have UC was diagnosed about 5 years ago, and it has been about 4 years ago that I have been hooked.  I am 9 years today with no alcohol.  I went to detox a year and a 1/2 ago.  I went 69 days and that was it.  The pain got the best of me.  I wish I could be normal.  And take them only when I need them.  I need support is there anyone out there to talk.  I am willing to listen.

Hi there,
First off congrats on your alcohol free life! That's huge, 9 years!! Today is your 9 year anniversary? Amazing, good for you. On a side note I honestly have so much respect for people recovering from alcohol addiction. I mean, it's everywhere. It's very socially acceptable to drink and drinking in excess is acceptable by most people. It's legal and it's found in every store and in gas stations sometimes. I don't know how you would go to a party store and see the wall of liquor behind the cashier and not go nuts. It's all around you, probably most people you know drink at least occasionally and do so in front of you. If all the above were true with vicodin (my doc) then I'd in no way be able to recover and stay clean without becoming reclusive and stay in my house all day every day...much respect!

Ok, on the norco thing. You have UC, I'm so sorry for that. I know it can be very painful, so I've heard/read. I have RA (rheumatoid arthritis) and it is also a lifelong disease that eats away at my joints and my immune system. I am on a medicine that is supposed to be preventative and help the RA slow down a but. Seems to be working, as my hands are no longer swelled up and stiff like they were. Other than that, I take motrin 800 as needed (no more than 3 times a day, usually i do it 2 times a day) and acetomenaphin when needed for pain. There are a TON of anti inflammatory pills that you could try, such as mobic and aleve...there are a lot of nsaids out there. I also take neurontin, and that has taken my sever shoulder pain down to a tolerable level. Don't get me wrong, I still deal with a lot of pain. I have had 6 surgeries for a shattered ankle/leg - they didn't think I'd walk again, it was that bad. I have a bulging disc in my lower back and one in my neck. I've got pain in both shoulders due to them coming out of the socket, and my hip came out of socket a few nights ago but popped back in...scary..but the RA is probably attacking the ankle shoulders and hip since they all were weak joints anyway. I am realistic to the fact that I'll proably need a hip replacement by the time I'm 45. I'll have to do what I have to do in order to stay healthy. I am very active in the spring summer and fall, walking 3 miles about 4 times a week. i love it. But in winter, I'm in double trouble since the cold weather in MI gets the best of my joints, and the fact that I cannot be outside walking..So I am no stranger to pain. I use heating pads, hot showers, stretch and such.

But with your disease, that's tricky, as you can't put a heating pad on it..are you on medication to help with the symptoms? I have read that there are different treatment options for it. How long have you had it? If you're in pain all the time, it may be a sign that whatever medication they put you on to control the symptoms may not be working - ask to try a different medication to control flare ups and such. With diseases like UC and RA, we have to do a trial and error process sometimes to get to the right treatment regimin . Have you changed your diet to accomodate your UC? Acupuncture can help too. You'd have to go more than once though for it to start working. Stress management can help with your flare ups too..Keep a journal of flare ups and your diet, and show it to your doctor. Just be honest with your doctor and say you're afraid of becoming addicted and you want to know what else you can take. They're there to help you and can point  you to different ways to help with your pain. I'm sorry you're suffering. Pain is not fun, I know that all too well. Im thankful though that I'm at a point that I can actually live life again and tolerate the pain I have, and that the pain I have is moderately controlled by the medicines I take. Just be proactive with your disease. Do all the research you can, and I"m sure there's lots of suggestions online to deal with the pain of UC. There's probably a lot of info you can find, and I know with RA there's packets of info you can subscribe to get, magazines designed just for RA..there may be one for UC.

Hope this helps a little. Congrats on your clean time from alcohol. Don't be so hard on yourself. If nothing else will help you like the norcos do (and try to find anything you can instead of those) then so be it. But please try and talk to your doctor and do research. You have to be proactive about it. Just do what you can and explore all avenues for pain reduction. Like I said, if nothing else works, then that's what it has to be. It doesn't mean you failed. Just be careful if norcos are the answer to the pain. Have someone hold them. Tell them that you can manipulate easily; addicts have a knack for that; tell them in no way should they give you the pills other than how they are prescribed. Be strict on this. Have the doc prescribe you a minmal amount, and only take as directed and when needed. I wish you the best of luck, I'll say a prayer for you. Take care!!!

Hi Eastbay, this is your lucky day! You've found a place here that's going to make all the difference in the world in getting yourself back.

I personaly took somewhere around 80,000 pain killers in a 9 year span just for recreation. Well, I did in the begining anyway, later it turned into chasing a high that wouldn't come anymore and holding off the sickness.

There are many members here who have to deal with chronic pain and yet have found a way to be off the heavy duty narcotics. Sundays' can be a slow day here so be patient, several will be along eventually to offer their stories and the solutions they have found to beat ongoing pain.

In the meantime, just hangout and post and read. It's very theraputic. You'll always have a place to go to talk about the craziness that is addiction.  Good luck in this, you can do it this time.
