Is klonopin more effective than valium for seizures and self injurious behavior?

I'm asking because my daughter is autistic with a seizure disorder, and at age 13 has already been on valium for 4 years. Due to the level of tolerance with any benzodiazepines, I'm not sure it's affecting her as it should be

Hello & Welcome!

Deb179 gave you some GREAT info. Maybe looked into what she was talking about. I know I had those tested. Over 3 and a half yrs ago I just stopped my Klons with 2 other drugs. I did not know about the side affects and they are not fun, and can be very dangerous to stop.

I do remember on the paper work it said that Klons are used for seizures and that Klons last alot longer in the system.  With many drugs we can build up a tolerance real quick on them. I would talk with the Doc and maybe get those test done. I will Pray there will be a more natural cure for her.

Hi Aklrish
I too am a mom of a 20 year old special needs daughter with a seizure disorder.
There is a forum on med help specifically for seizures ( its not very active though ).  I'm going to friend request you, also...please feel free to message me any time.
first thing I want to ask. ...has she ever been tested for vitamin B12 & D3 deficiency?
Low levels of those vitamins will cause extreme behavioral issue with kids like ours...I was only JUST made aware of that this year.
The meds our kids are put on for seizures deplete those vitamins.
as for 4 years on Valium I'm sure her tolerance has made it basically useless, many times docs leave them on just because it's very hard to get them off.
we were in the same situation...this last year I weaned my daughter from all benzos, use them now only as rescue meds.
BUT...with that being said please don't make any changes to her meds without her neuros help as weaning can cause life threatening seizures, needs to be done EXTREMELY slow ....but I would sure ask if it's a possibility.
over time they're put on so many drugs it almost becomes impossible to know what helps and what hurts.
I just heard about a trial starting for a keto pill....same benefits as the ketogenic diet, but they can eat normal food.
Anyways...here if I can help :)
