Long term codeine use effects

My husband has been on a pain management regimen for over 15 years which includes hydrocodeine daily.  He takes the meds a prescribed.  He is now displaying renal symptoms.  Can you direct me to information regarding the long term effects of this particular drug's use on the body?

I was told my liver damage was caused by a mixture of alcohol and codeine.

Well this is what I was told by a physician. He said that he really believed that codeine alone taken as prescribed would not have any negative effect on the body. It is the stuff that comes along with the codeine that can be damaging. Now I believe his statement about no damage is controversial because many  physicians believe that physical dependency on the drug IS damage.

I think the best course of action would be to discuss this with a kidney specialist.  . That would be an opinion that I would trust the most.

I'd ask a pharmacist. They are a  wealth of information regarding medicines, and these types of issues.  Gooduck,..
