On the flip side I do regret and am dreading the day when I actually need pain meds. I know my tolerance is not the same, but from the experience of a million relapses, tolerance is regained very quickly. I am afraid of what it may take to make me comfortable. Been a patient on both sides too, and do not like the feeling of being treated like an addict either.
It is important for you guys to have that open line of communication. My wife and I did not and she had to educate herself after I went into rehab. These drugs help so much, but can be a double-edge sword as well. Most will not see a problem till it is too late. There is still that big imaginary line that is drawn to separate what was thought of as a moral deficiency, but now looked at as a mental illness. My opinion is that does not matter because the goal is the same as it was for anyone else who has been down this path; to quit, and do it at all cost.
I do not know the exact timing, but it usually takes around two weeks for the body to become physically addicted. Pills containing Hydrocodone are fast acting with a short half life and Methadone is somewhat slower but with a longer half life. I do not know the exact numbers for these, but would if I were still taking them. Methadone is slower to act, but builds up over time and will make a person think they are in the clear from withdrawals when they are not. It usually takes about 72 hours for Methadone to leave the system so you may quit your drug of choice, but not face any symptoms for 3 days. It is normally not sugarcoated at all, but we all forget till it slams us right in the face.
Methadone just sticks with the body longer. I do not think one pill is better or worse than the next. Individual situations determine that. I would not wish withdrawals on my worst enemy, however, they are not even close to being the end of the world. They are dramatized and made to be more than they are. Fact is, it is just a long, drawn out cold. It is nothing you have never felt, but it is strong enough that you will not forget either.
