Body beig extremy dependent on the feel good, relaxing, addictive little anoiying, hard to get little pills. LOL. I know some peole are fournate to get off of pills easier than others, while others is a bit harder. Great thing is that as crappy and draned I feel I am NOT going back!! I too was just thinking myself about how I can't sleep, and I thought about alcohol (even though I know in my heart its not a good idea, my mind did go there...)

Thank God I read this posting!!  Thank you for all the information everyone!

joycee418 - hope you get some rest tonight :) there are some great tips here; sometimes I find even simple things help like taking a bath, warm milk or reading... it will distract you from thinking about how you can't sleep.  Good luck!

Drinking booze will aggravate your problem with sleep. It messes with your brain chemicals and is counter productive to getting healthy sleep. Also, like dominosarah says, it's super easy to switch addictions. You've abused your body with drugs...don't add alcohol to the mix. Give your body a chance to heal that is the quickest way to get sleep to come back to you. Be sure to get a multi-vitamin, B vitamins, Zinc and lots of C.
Also get yourself some GABA (Gamma Aminobutyric Acid) from a health food store. .

You will sleep when your body really needs it. If you ever feel tired take the opportunity to nap-even if it's in the middle of the day. Don't worry about messing up your sleep schedule because it's already messed up .Grab a nap whenever you can. Your sleep will become more regular with time. It's past midnight for me and I'm probably going to be up all night (again).  I'm going on a month of clean and I'm still having problems. It's just the nature of the beast. Don't worry about it and take it in stride. Things will be better.

You really should consider getting GABA. It will help.

GABA'S ROLE IN THE BRAIN (you should be convinced to get some GABA after you finish reading my post):

Glutamate (a common amino acid) is the major excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain.  GABA is the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain.  Glutamate speeds things up and when they are going too fast, GABA slows them back down.  If there is a problem with the GABA in our brains, the neurons fire more and more, increasing the speed of the processes in the brain.

When GABA binds to a nerve cell receptor, it opens the nerve cell so that chloride ions which are present in the brain are allowed to move into the nerve cell and slow the activity of the cell, and the person normally experiences a calming feeling (this is why you will take your GABA in the evening).

As an example, if our brain produces more excitatory neurotransmitters like norepinephrine or epinephrine (adrenaline) than normal, we can become anxious or have more stress than normal.  If our brain is working normally, it will produce more GABA and this will slow down the actions in the brain and thus have a calming and relaxing effect on us.

It is widely believed that caffeine produces its stimulant effects by inhibiting the release of GABA and thereby allowing the increase of excitatory neurotransmitters.  Research has shown that a major factor in people who suffer from anxiety disorders or panic attacks AND in people who have become ADDICTED or DEPENDENT to street drugs, prescription drugs and alcohol is that they are likely to be suffering from low GABA activity (read it again: low GABA activity).

Benzodiazepines like Xanax, Valium and Ativan and Sedatives/Hypnotics like Ambien, Sonata and Lunesta, work to increase the effectiveness of GABA in your brain.  To the extent that they are successful, these drugs will produce a calming effect. You can use them with GABA. GABA will work without them also.

You definitely want to wean yourself off the Xanax, which it sounds like you are doing. Good job.

Stay Strong,
Greebs

Not at all ... just making a point... wasn't directed at you... it's just if you have ever had the alcohol directly affect you .. you seem to become very defensive where that crap is concerned

Hey chick... just a word... if you go get the melatonin.. ask someone at the health store or pharmacy if you are still taking the xanax.. melatonin is naturally produced in the body but alot of supplements say if you are taking anti-anxiety meds that you shouldn't take the supplements with them too so make sure it is ok to take both.. your pharmacist will know best.. so be safe girl...
