New OxyContin formula should help some
You can't crush the new pills. There is also another OxyContin pill coming out where there us medication in the center so that if you split it the medication basically kills the pill. My wife is a medical writer and say the case studies.
Anyway I would think (hope) that this new formula should help people that snort and/ or crush. Help as in force them to stop or get help since that "high" isn't there anymore. Or is it wishful thinking? Maybe they will find other ways or different drugs. But that's a step in the right direction for addicts. Soon all OCs will be like that. well once i came off i just felt alive again,, truly its amazing how much happier of a person u can b come for 5 yrs my life was all about oxys , counting, taking more than i should, freaking out wen i was almost out ,, but now dont have 2 worry about it ,, my kids have even said ive changed ( not that they new of my addicition ) but it really showed me how focused i was on the drug always thinking bout the drug ,, not anymore thank god,, im a new happier person ..
Also sometimes I think we assume addicts will switch drugs. Take myself, I'm an addict but I have zero access or knowledge on how to get anything outside of my med scripts. I would either have to follow the rules or quit. Stats class thought me that there is a % of people like me then. If just that group can cut itself down by half it's a huge win

I think everyone has a point. I agree with Jeremy too in that an addict will find a way.

I dont have much faith in this new formulation stopping addicts abusing their meds. All this new formulation does is prevent illicit routes of administration such as insuffulation or injection but does nothing to deter people from swallowing handfuls of said pills.
This kind of arms race has done little in the past except to encourage resourceful addicts to develop their own methods to counter those of the Pharmaceutical Companies.Pharmco's developing new formulations, in an effort,to kerb abuse is not a new idea and has historically shown little success.
Many narcotics already contain excessive amounts of acetaminophen which is toxic when taken in large doses. I know there is a synergistic effect that is derived from combining these 2 medications but it is no great issue to produce narcotic only medicines and have Healthcare Professionals prescribe both seperately and have them taken concurrently. I believe Pharmcos have combined the 2 because of the deterent effect this combination is meant to pose to the addict. This subtle attempt to limit the abuse potential of these kinds of narcotic painkillers has been less than succesful so far and was the gensis of CWE.
Again a similar thing occured here in NZ with both Adderal(dexamphetamine) and Rubifen(Methylphenidate/ Ritalin) which was being diverted for the illicit market. Pharmcos developed a tamper proof tablet immune from abuse. Well guess what? It wasnt as tamper proof as they had thought. While they may have added an extra 10-15 minutes in the time it takes to prepare for injection,this is a price most addicts are willing to pay.
MST or morphine sulphate tablets were being diverted by backyard chemists here in NZ and turned into homemade heroin with a purity and potency that would rival the efforts of any accomplished chemist. So once again the powers that be decide a new tamperproof formulation was required that would be a fortified agaist any assault by the guile and cunning of the kitchen chemist. Well, im sure you may have already guessed what happened. The new morphine formula was quickly set upon by the desperate addict hungry for his fix and soon found this new morhine was easier to convert than the old one. The new tablet marketed as a bastion of temperance was an abysmal failure.
So this nonsense has been going on for years. There are too many more examples to list. There is no doubt that the technical savy already exists for Pharmco's to develop a near 100% tamperproof/ (limited abuse potential) narcotic painkiller. As a "for profit' industry they would never willingly write off such a huge percentage of their annual profit by marginalising a large proportion of their market.
There is no circumventing the abuse issue via the development of smart medications. The only tenable solution is;Sensible drug education, Free and unfettered access to rehabillitation centres and detoxification units, Free and unfettered access to a variety of different aftercare options, Reintergration of marginalised drug addicts into mainstream society. And for those who arent ready; Compassionate healthcare workers who promote harm reduction, Maitanence treatments and variations on its administration to accomodate different socioeconomic and cultural differences, Education at the coalface by healthcare workers/social workers, A@D councilors about different routes into abstinence based programs.

^^ i second that, thank God i'm off of oxys!! I would hate to be "forced" into stopping bc of the new formula (even if it is for the better)! I hope it will help more people into recovery than it gets people to start heroin and/or other drugs!
i dont think we have that yet here in australia... im off them now but i think it should help if thats what there going 2 do but mayb it will turn people 2 other drugs .. i dont really no ... thank god im off them..
The change has made a BIG difference over here in San Francisco. The block that was well known for it (pill hill) has thinned out substantially. Was even mentioned on the news.
It was one of many factors that got me off them. In 1 year I think (and hope) oxycontin OD's will fall dramatically.

I think every little bit helps. I would like to see more programs out there also for addiction.
??help and hurt...not my DOC ....but i know alot of people that it is ...i am detoxing right now so it doesnt matter to me personally but i know another who is stopping because of the OPs ( your are correct with the name)) and i know a few who have moved to heroin because of it.....so i definatly think it will change some things but for good or bad..that....im not sure of yet...they just started those here in NC
