Nicotine Withdrawal and Rapid Heartbeat

I have a 44 year old son who was a heavy smoker for many years.About 6 weeks ago he stopped smoking. Since then he has had numerous periods of rapid heartbeat,as well as anxiety attacks. The rapid heartbeat problem usually occurs at night ,awakening him from sleep. It has also occurred when driving to and from work, but not as frequently. He also power walks for exercise, but has not experienced rapid heartbeat during the walks.
Is rapid hearbeat a sympton of nicotine withdrawal? If so, how long can it be expected to last?

After doing a little research under nicotine withdrawal, i do not find excellerated heart rate amonst the symptoms listed with
other withdrawal symptoms.  Maybe he should see a doctor.  The smoking could have masked a problem unknown to him.  It is worth
knowing what is causing the increased heart rate, for it could be
serious.  Welcome to the forum.  Keep us posted.

It very likely is a withdrawal symptom, but it could be something else.  Rapid heartbead can be a sign of a more serious problem, so I'd urge you to get him to a Doctor to check him out.
We're not Docs here, and can't really give medical advise. When the heart is involved, better to ask a Doc face to face.

good luck!

I wish I knew more about Nicotine, however, If I had to say, it is definitely part of withdrawal, especially with the times he experiences the rapid heartbeat.  Your body and mind both get dependant on the nicotine and when its not there, well, I guess your body just doesn't know how to react.  I really wish I had a better explanation, but I wouldn't worry about it, i'm sure its withdrawal.
