On norco for 1 year and doctor wont fill my script

Hi my name is Amanda and I have been taking Norco 7.5 for almost a year and my pain doctor just stopped my meds cold turkey yesterday. I am a type 1 diabetic for 14 years and I was on the med because of severe nerve damage in my legs and lower back pain. Im so upset and I'm starting the withdraws. I never abused my meds I always took them like I was directed and on my good days I took less. The reason my doctor gave me that he had to stop my meds is because He wants to do injections in my back that are only temporary and expensive and I don't have that kind of money to just shell out. I'm on unemployment and my husband works less then 40 hours a week because of the bad economy. He just started a new job and we lost our insurance from his old job and I wont get new insurance untill December or January. Anyways I'm rambling......I just don't know what to do...My blood sugars are all over the place and I have no one to take care of my 3 year old during withdraws...I need help and I went to the E.R and they said it wasn't a medical emergency and sent me home. What can I do?????

i have nerve damage as well and am going through the injections until i get the nerve endings lasered off in a few days. These injections do work, but they are very expensive without insurance and mine only work for 2-3 days, yet I only get them once a month, so there's still a lot of time in pain, my pain dr keeps you on meds til you do the laser, and then he weans you off. The laser will work anywhere from 6 months to permenantly, depending on if they grow back. I agree that the pain management forum might be a better help. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. Good luck to you.

Dr_BS_MD -  Without her medical history its impossible to say what would have been an 'appropriate' medication for her - perhaps she has a history of stomach ulcers and is unable to take anti inflammatories, or has some other contraindication to them.

Amanda - sorry you're going through this - just wanted to say that if you copied and pasted your post on to the 'pain management' forum you may get some help there, as I believe they have some members with nerve pain like you. I don't know much about it myself. Best of luck.

You’re basically taking Hydrocodone(Vicodin), a highly addictive narcotic.

What stuns me most is how physician abuse on handing out, erroneously indicated narcotic prescriptions for inflammatory pain, instead of using more efficient, non addictive medication. This is a sign that the physician doesn’t understand the types of pain, pain receptors in the body nor treatment.

In recovering from your addiction, Methadone or Clonidine(prescription required) will help, though pain will be accentuated during suppression/abstinence.

A long acting, anti-inflammatory, steroidal drug would have worked better at getting rid of the pain and with no addictive properties at proper dosage. Good Luck.

I know I read something about sugar levels and going through withdraws so make sure you watch it. I am not going to say that cold turkey is a piece of cake but it is doable. I went cold turkey from vicodin and soma 6 months ago and although the withdraws were pretty bad I was still able to function. You can lay on the couch and watch your 3 yr old and watch some cartoons or kids movies and that will help from him/her to not be so active. Kids will eat fast things so don't plan cooking much. You will be able to do it, and of course there is nap time. Just do the best you can do that is the only choice you have. You will be able to do this trust me. You will be thankful to be off the norco when your head clears and you will think clearer and just feel more alert. I know you don't think so right now but things will work out. try taking some ibuprophen for the pain and just take it easy. I wish you luck and get on here for support there are a lot of good people here to give advice or just talk.
